I am in love with Johnny. Give me, I pray, a living, breathing Johnny to cuddle...
Awesome you are at character development.
TheHeffalump chapter 24 . 1/17/2015
"He's in a comma"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. (Sorry). I guess the spelling mistake isn't THAT out (meaning wise).
And at least he's not in a full stop :)

Seriously, though, I'm enjoying this adaptation of Mansfield Park.
StoryPirate chapter 4 . 11/15/2014
I have to admit... I kind of liked Scott's POV. I liked his section on Kate. :) I still hate the guy (I can't stand the Crawfords), but I enjoyed you writing his POV and how he opened his section on Kate.
ellakeogh23 chapter 14 . 10/15/2014
Just to let you know I love your portrayal of Amanda. Without Jess overshadowing Amanda's own personality Amanda is actually really smart and funny. Definitely my favourite character in this fic!
By the way, you are a wonderful writer - I've read almost all your other work. Please finish the Northanger Abbey fic, please!
Hazelmist chapter 29 . 7/10/2014
Yay they all lived happily ever after! I can not believe you made me fall head over heels in love with Johnny and even Manda and Yates! It was a bit weird how Mrs. Mansfield kind of just disappears and Mr. Mansfield and Aunt Lucy kind of vanish too but I suppose in the book they don't play a huge role either. I'm surprised I really ended up enjoying the way you alternated the view point between Kate, Adrien and even Scott. It actually made me like Scott seeing where he was coming from. I mean he's a complete d-bag don't get me wrong, but somehow you actually make us see him as well, human, I guess, like really, really human if that makes any sense. And giving Kate a personality and a relationship with Johnny and later Manda was awesome. I especially loved Manda's emails and the others as well, it was a comical modern touch. I wasn't the biggest fan of Fanny but I love your version of her. I was a bit fed up with Adrien throughout but it was kind of cool seeing him jealous of Johnny and seeing the rest of the family kind of taking sides and in Johnny's case showing up with a Team Kate shirt, haha. Hell, even Jess got some depth and I ended up liking her more than Rachel (except for the scenes with Johnny, cause Scott's right they have chemistry). Becka and Christian were a funny addition and a good way to give Kate that extra push. I'm glad she finally got to go off on her own before she finally got together with Adrien. The ending was sweet and the epilogue where you brought them all together as a family entirely of their own was awesome.
Light on the Horizon chapter 29 . 6/9/2014
Great story :)
JRB chapter 1 . 10/9/2013
So, yeah, you basically can do no wrong with your modern/futurized spin on Austen.
Guest chapter 3 . 4/10/2013
Great so far.
jayley chapter 29 . 3/29/2013
so i've been looking at my favourite stories list and came across this one. i really only remembered the this story had a happy ending, so i decided to reread it! so now it's a real favourite of mine again:) i enjoyed how you really could make all of the characters somewhat likeable and even have some depth to them too. although i did notice that i wasn't so much cheering for adrien as taking it as a point of fact that kate loved him, and would therefore be happiest with him, as i found myself liking both johnny and scott as candidates against my will. you hardly ever see a story where the 'bad' guys have more to them than just needing to be completely bad
aureliasilver chapter 28 . 10/10/2012
I love your modernization of Mansfield park and its characters. Bravo and thanks for the lovely ride.
JillIsMe chapter 29 . 8/15/2011
Scott's Mental Monologue: Jess lived with me for three months after The Sex That Got Us Thrown Out. I didn't mind, but I also didn't mind waking up to find her gone. She's done well for herself, considering the stock trader she's living with in New York is a clever, outspoken, ruthless, flies-in-the-face-of-marriage type. Honestly, he sounds an awful lot like me.

Jessica (Over the phone): Manda's finally convinced Don to take the plunge. So, you wanna be my date?

Scott's Mental Monologue: It wouldn't suck to show up at the wedding with Jess on my arm, just to rub the Mansfields' noses in it, but that's not a healthy thought to have five years after the fact. I should have moved on by now.

Scott: Why would I?

Jessica: Good! If you had said yes, I would have killed you. Not that it was a real invite, of course.

Scott: Of course.

Scott's Mental Monologue: We're both so full of shit.

Jess: You know what? Fuck the wedding! We should get together, because we want to, but you can't try to sleep with me.

Scott: Don't flatter yourself, Sweetheart! Four girlfriends are four too many.

Jessica: You've only got three sluts vying for your attention? I expected better from you.

Scott's Mental Monologue: They were all blonde, they all thought they were in an exclusive relationship with me, and I didn't really like any of them. I hadn't really liked a girl in five years.

Rachel (Over the phone): FINALLY! I've been trying to call you for an hour! Which one of your harem was tying up the line this time?

Scott: Jess Mansfield.

Rachel: Jess Mansfield? She hasn't kicked your ass to the curb yet?

Scott: I guess we're both gluttons for punishment.

Rachel: I'll take a seat at your table, because I've been waiting five years for a thank-you note from Kate Mansfield. After all, Adrien never would have seen the light without my help.

Scott's Mental Monologue: This isn't a sore spot for her, but it is for me, and she's relishing every twist of the knife. Some sister, huh? Actually, she got a thank-you email from Johnny Mansfield two weeks after all the shit hit the fan. It read: "According to Kate, you aren't as hardcore of a bitch as I thought. This makes me respect you a little bit less, but like you a little bit more. Stress on that second "a little bit." Cheers, Love. Don't be a stranger!" For all I know, they've been fucking like rabbits for the last five years.

Scott: Fuck off, Rachel! *Hangs up the phone*

Scott's Mental Monologue: Getting the last word in with Rachel is a rare treat.

Phone: *Malicious Ring*

Rachel: You didn't give me the chance to invite you to have a drink with me.

Scott: Are you buying?

Rachel: Obviously.

Scott: I'm in.

Kate: Have pity, Manda! I'd look like a giant lollipop in that.

Kate's Mental Monologue: We are looking at the first Bridal magazine in the sea of magazines that are covering...basically every available surface.

Manda: Alright. Moving on!

Johnny: But I would look stunning in that pink.

Manda: It would bring out your eyes, but I like Kate better, so she has the final say.

Kate's Mental Monologue: Johnny and Manda start throwing packets of sweetener at each other, which isn't productive, but it does give me an opportunity to bury the offensive pink dress in the magazine sea.

Johnny: We should invite the Harringtons to the wedding.

Adrien: You're too antagonistic for your own good, Johnny Mansfield.

Johnny: And yet...you LOVE me! Seriously, though, it would be a nice gesture. Besides, I liked Rachel, because she was hot, and you're married to Kate, so it's a win-win.

Kate: That is some seriously warped logic.

Kate's Mental Monologue: I'm dreading the idea of reuniting with Scott, because I'm terrified that I would still be an easy target for his charm and half-truths. Apparently, Johnny ran into him three months ago, and he hasn't changed, which means knowing me had no affect on him. I don't know if my pride or my heart is more wounded by that thought. After all, I know I could have loved him, and I think I could have saved him.

Adrien: Antagonistic!

Johnny: How quickly we forget who pays the bills around here!

Kate's Mental Monologue: Shockingly, Johnny does. Mr. Mansfield's heart attack left Johnny in charge of the business, and it turned out he is quite the businessman, as is Don. Johnny and his getaway car driver becoming productive members of society could only be described as a "miracle". Of course, Johnny still resists some social norms, such as marriage, but I doubt he'll be single forever. And, as far as Adrien and I are concerned...we are deliriously happy.

Adrien: Good morning, Wife.

Kate: Good morning, Husband.

Kate's Mental Monologue: Do you see what I mean about being deliriously happy?

Adrien: How are the wedding plans coming along?

Manda: Johnny's pissed because I won't let him wear pink.

Johnny: Only real men can pull off pink.

Don: Since when are you a REAL man?

Kate's Mental Monologue: Johnny and Don start play-fighting, and Manda starts play-shouting for them to break it up, and Adrien takes me to a more secluded spot...where he pretends to be angry that I've spent more time on my wedding duties than my wifely duties, but he really just wants to make out.

Johnny: *Offers Kate a cup of coffee*

Kate: Did you make this just for me?

Johnny: Who else, Beautiful?

Kate: You should be making coffee for your wife.

Johnny: *Scowls* This is why I hate weddings! As soon as one person in your social circle gets married, EVERYONE in your social circle is supposed to get married.

Kate: I just want you to be happy, Johnny.

Kate: I am happy, Beautiful. *Kisses Kate's cheek* I have you.

Kate: Always.

Johnny: Then, I win.

Kate: Do you see that?

Johnny: See what?

Kate: Adrien, Manda, and Don. That's our family.

Johnny: More or less...if you just HAVE TO claim them.

Kate's Mental Monologue: These people have definitely given me more happiness than I ever could have dreamed of.

Kate: I guess I HAVE TO claim them.

Kate's Mental Monologue: I think about the girl who talked herself out of wanting to be a Mansfield, and I pity her.
JillIsMe chapter 28 . 8/15/2011
Adrien (Over the phone): Johnny's okay.

Jessica: Good.

Adrien: Are you going to be okay?

Jessica: GOD! I'm ALWAYS okay, Adrien! You're the one who can never get your shit together.

Adrien: Do you remember that day you told me you were going to marry Matthew Wright?

Jessica: Mmmhmmm.

Adrien: You said you never would have cheated if you were married.

Jessica: No, I said I never would have started cheating if I was married. Scott and I had been going on a long time before I married Matthew.

Adrien: I don't need the reminder, Jess!

Jessica: So, what about you and Rachel?

Adrien: There's been a change of plans.

Jessica: Did Kate make a last minute comeback?

Adrien: She did.

Jessica: Well, that's that. We were never going to like each others spouses, after all. You and I are just too different, and I'm okay with that.

Adrien: Me too.

Adrien's Mental Monologue: Comeback or not, Kate was going to leave me, which seemed pointless, because she'd just be sitting in her dorm room until Fall semester started. And yet, she'd been talking to her old roommate, and convincing Don to drive her back to school, and discussing coarse loads with Johnny, but she hadn't shared any of these things with me. I'd just happened to be in the vicinity of these conversations, because, when I got my way, I was always in the vicinity of Kate.

Manda: I'm thrilled things are the best they've ever been between you and Johnny, but I wish Jess would talk to me. She won't answer my emails. She won't answer my calls. I'm not sure what I did to deserve this. It's not like I'm the one who chucked Lover Boy out of the house! No offense.

Adrien's Mental Monologue: I didn't take offense. In fact, after the way he treated Kate, I would have chucked "Lover Boy" out of the house every day for the rest of my life. Kate, Kate, Kate! What was I going to do about Kate? I wanted her, and she wanted out, and I couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Johnny: You're being your own worst enemy, Kate! Rachel gave you Adrien on a silver platter. All you have to do is reach out and grab what's always been yours.

Kate: Adrien doesn't want me!

Kate's Mental Monologue: I'd already had this argument with Becka. If Adrien wanted me, why hadn't he made his move? Becka countered that she had known Christian since the second grade, and it took them until college to make something happen. I had my suspicions that Becka had been too busy matchmaking to focus on her own love life, but I kept said suspicions to myself.

Johnny: If I was in that coma right now, I would still know that Adrien loves you, and that he wants you more than anything in this world.

Kate: He's had his whole life to claim me, so why has he waited this long?

Johnny: First, she hates him because he doesn't want her, and now, she hates him because he does. You'll be the death of me, Kate Pierson!

Adrien: So, what do I do, Johnny? She's leaving. Kate's leaving! How do I fix this?

Johnny's Mental Monologue: Oh, my beautiful coma, I'm sorry I didn't appreciate you. Please come back to me, because I'm about to kill these people!

Johnny: You fix this by doing what Kate has wanted you to do all along: ANYTHING! You put your keys in the ignition, you start your car, you drive to the college, and you bring her back. If you can't think of the perfect speech in seven hours, I'm sure her roommate, some banshee named Becka, can tell you exactly what to say.

Adrien: Of course I could do something! Anybody can do something! I think I'm just scared of what happens after I do something.

Johnny: She kisses you, and loves you forever, and cartoon birds will dress you both in the morning, because you will be living a life straight out of a Disney movie.

Adrien: What if it doesn't work out? What if I lose her romantically, and then I lose her friendship? I'm nothing without Kate. I'd die.

Johnny: Well, that would be one less of you I'd have to deal with! Listen to me, you moronic jackass! Kate. loves. you. She's always loved you. She will always love you. Now get the fuck out!

Adrien: I'm glad we had this talk.

Johnny: Of course you are. I do save all my best material for you.

Kate: Don, I can't get there if we don't leave.

Manda: But...you can't go now.

Don: That's right! I don't have a car.

Kate: Since when?

Don: Since Adrien isn't here yet.

Manda: *Slaps Don upside the head* YAY! ADRIEN'S HERE!

Kate's Mental Monologue: She and Don start high-five-ing each other, and I trudge out the front door, ready to meet my doom.

Adrien: You weren't even going to say goodbye?

Kate's Mental Monologue: This is why I've given up on Adrien. After all these years of waiting and pining and heartbreak...all he wants is a goodbye.

Adrien: Why are you leaving?

Kate: Sorry?

Adrien: Why are you leaving now?

Kate: Well, you and Johnny don't need me to play mediator anymore, and...

Adrien: We'll always need you, Kate. Stay.

Kate: But there's classes with really intense...books, and...

Adrien: You won't get credit for any of that work, because you've already missed too much school. Stay.

Kate: But...Becka! Becka needs constant supervision.

Adrien: Becka's lasted this long without you. Besides, that's what Christian is for. I'm asking you to stay, Kate.

Kate: Why?

Adrien: Because...I'm in love with you.

Adrien's Mental Monologue: So, I'm kissing Kate, MY Kate, and I start thinking that Johnny was onto something. I really am a moronic jackass, because doing something...is pretty fucking AWESOME!
JillIsMe chapter 27 . 8/15/2011
Adrien's Mental Monologue: I am moral to a fault. If I am supposed to do something...I do it. If the person who should be doing something isn't available...I do it. Kate was in love with Scott, and Scott had slept with Jess, and Johnny wasn't around to sort things out, so comforting Kate became my responsibility. I would have been glad to talk to her about Scott...if I wasn't in love with her.

Adrien: I'm sorry about Scott and Jess. Even though I don't like him, I know you love him...so you have every right to hurt.

Kate: I DON'T love Scott! That's why I'm so ANGRY at myself for caring about him screwing around with Jess. I don't love him, so this shouldn't matter, but it does.

Adrien's Mental Monologue: All I could do was sit beside her, and pull her close, and kiss the top of her head, and try not to rejoice...because she didn't love Scott. Then, Kate told me everything: from Scott asking to be her friend in the piano room, to Scott asking her not to go to college, to Scott showing up at her dorm, to Scott kissing her, to Scott breaking up with her, to Scott sleeping with Jess. She even explained that she hadn't answered my emails because she didn't know how to tell me all of this at the time. How could I have missed SO MUCH of her life?

Kate: I should have been honest with you, Adrien. That's my biggest regret about all of this. It's just...you were getting closer to Rachel, and I didn't know how to deal with that. I guess I was jealous, but I shouldn't have been, because you're my best friend, even if our lives go in different directions. I totally suck for forgetting that.

Adrien's Mental Monologue: Holy shit! RACHEL! I was going to have to end things with Rachel, because I'm in love with Kate, who only sees me as a friend.

Adrien: I'm so sorry, Kate.

Kate: Don't be! What happened with Scott isn't your fault.

Adrien's Mental Monologue: Actually, I was sorry that I had waited so long to realize I was in love with her, but she did have a point: I was sorry that Scott had caused her pain.

Kate's Mental Monologue: I awaken...to Adrien in my bed. OH GOD! Having a taste of what I can never have is too cruel to deal with right now, so I stagger to the kitchen.

Manda: Adrien should do the shopping today. He can only function when he has something to fix.

Kate's Mental Monologue: I was amazed by how capably Manda was managing the household in Adrien's stead.

Manda: So, have you seen my boyfriend? *Eyes narrow* The mute. Never mind! I don't want to know that he is talking to everyone but me.

Kate: Manda...

Manda: It's that damn guilt! I've tried to tell him that if he'd been driving, he'd be in the hospital bed right next to Johnny, but...

Kate: MANDA!

Manda: Oh my God, Kate! WHAT'S WRONG?

Kate's Mental Monologue: I guess she'd finally noticed the state of my clothes, being that they were the same ones I had worn the day before.

Kate: Well...

Rachel: Where's my brother?

Kate's Mental Monologue: Adrien claimed the chair next to mine. Apparently, he was Team Kate now, but only because I had been such a mess last night.

Rachel: He's not here, is he?

Adrien: I'd be very surprised if he were.

Manda: You know...I went to Jess's room this morning, and she was gone too. So, what's going on, Family? *Looks at Adrien's grim expression* Oh. Jess and Scott, huh? That's...kind of cliche at this point, isn't it?

Kate's Mental Monologue: Rachel gave me an almost imperceptible nod of defeat, and a gave her a nod of understanding, and she proceeded to let Adrien go...without him even realizing what she was doing. Nobody plays the game like Rachel Harrington, because, when Rachel goes down, she goes down with STYLE.

Rachel: Everyone, I need to say something: I know Johnny's in this coma, and I respect how you're all letting your lives revolve around that right now. But, honestly, let's face it. Things aren't looking so good for him, and as much as I'd love it too if Johnny did live, we've really got to get on with our lives. Besides, even if he does die—and like I said, it's not that I want him to—but I have to say, I really don't see how it will affect anyone. He doesn't even like the lot of you, and you don't really like him. Jess and Scott are just embracing reality. Getting on with their lives. It's healthy. I know she's married, and that offends your moral code, or whatever. But, baby, it's the 21st century! Adultery is perfectly socially acceptable. It's practically in style. And, honestly, Kate, this whole mess is your fault. If you'd just dated him instead of...

Kate's Mental Monologue: When Rachel went after me, Adrien snapped. As terrible as it makes me sound, being the straw that broke the camel's back was sort of flattering.

Adrien: DON'T TALK TO KATE LIKE THAT! I'm sorry, Rachel, but we're DONE.

Rachel: I'll live.

Kate's Mental Monologue: And she glided out of the room, head held high. There was no wailing. There was no gnashing of teeth. There was just Rachel Harrington...letting Adrien dump her in a way that wouldn't leave him wracked with guilt. I mouthed "Thank you" as she passed me, but I don't know if she saw.

Manda: And I thought my boyfriend drama was overwhelming.

Adrien: Boyfriend what now?

Manda: To hell with it! I'm dating Don.

Kate's Mental Monologue: While Adrien was driving around to clear his head, he got the news: Johnny was AWAKE!

Johnny: THANK GOD! I was afraid you'd show up with an entourage of Harringtons.

Kate's Mental Monologue: The moment was too perfect to waste on explanations about why there would never be an "entourage of Harringtons" again.

Johnny: Hey, Beautiful! I saved you some Jell-O.

Kate: You're NEVER driving again. Ever! I could have handled Scott on my own!

Johnny: I know you could have. I just wanted to watch you kick his ass.

Kate's Mental Monologue: Johnny called Adrien "Little Brother," and Adrien, who had yet to leave the protection of the doorway, had to leave the room to collect himself. Oh, my boys! My stupid, wonderful boys!

Johnny: What crawled up his ass?

Kate's Mental Monologue: That was "Is he alright" in Johnny Speak. Sometimes, I wish Adrien was around when Johnny expressed concern for him.

Kate: You'll have to forgive Adrien for...

Johnny: Getting weepy like a little girl?

Kate: If he was in this bed, you'd be just as bad.

Johnny: Not a chance! My crying would kick his crying's ass.

Kate: Cut him some slack, huh? He's had a rough morning.

Johnny: Goody! I sense a scandal!

Kate: Several scandals. It turns out Rachel's different than Adrien thought she was.

Johnny: That's not a scandal.

Kate: Well, Manda's dating Don.

Johnny: I'll kill him, once I find a new driver for my getaway car...since you're not letting me drive anymore.

Kate: You're damn right!

Johnny: Relax, Mom! I'm still waiting on the actual scandal.

Kate: I caught Scott and Jess having sex, so Adrien kicked him out of the house, and now they've run away together.

Johnny: That's more like it. God, I love that kid!

Kate: You should tell him.

Johnny: *Grumbles* Fine. Fetch me my holier-than-everyone brother, wench!

Kate: You're not too bad, Johnny Mansfield.

Johnny: That goes without saying. So, what's the story with you and Adrien?

Kate: That's the only thing I don't know.

Kate's Mental Monologue: I tell Adrien that Johnny wants to talk to him, and his eyes light up like it's Christmas morning, sort of like Johnny's did when he said he loved Adrien, and I think about both of my boys taking me to the same Waffle House (well, Johnny had kidnapped me), and I know things can only get better from here. So, I leave my boys to their bonding, and I call Manda. She and Don deafen me with their ecstatic shrieking, and they promise to come to the hospital, quickly, but not too quickly, because Adrien and Johnny are getting it right...for once. Hopefully, they'll be getting it right from now on. After all, there's nothing like a coma for waking a person up.
