I echo some of the comments of other reviewers about how refreshing it is to see the "tables being turned", with Christine pursuing Erik. With regard to the duet between E & C in this chapter, I personally didn't think it was any crueler than the circumstances under which that song was originally sung (i.e., on the roof of the Opera House, with Christine's cruel words to Raoul about Erik's face and her fear of him). In my opinion, Erik is entitled to a little (or a lot of) payback. That said, from another angle, his choice of song for their duet could also have been a not-so-subtle reminder to Christine of her fear of him and her choice to run into Raoul's arms all those years ago, however much she may protest that she loves Erik now. Either way, good for him. Honestly, if Christine can't take some resistance from Erik without immediately turning to hate toward him, then her "love" is pretty shallow and meaningless. |
