Totally excellent! James asked him to join? Sheer madness! This knowing that it was what would break him and Lily up forever. I'll bet it was set up.

How does Dumbledore call Snape his friend? Is it a friend's deed to make someone join the Death Eater and risk life and freedom and person as a spy? If Dumbledore had forced Snape to join the Death Eaters why does he let everyone taunt him?

"You owe us Severus". I would think all debts were paid with the first time that Snape joined the Death Eaters. Actually Harry should be in Snape's debt multiple times over as Snape is spending too much time saving Harry. And there isn't a debt to compell him.

I'm glad Fawkes has abandoned Dumbledore. He should have done it earlier. If you didn't kill Snape in this story could you write a sequel? Have Dumbledore kill himself in remorse.

Damnation! I was all ready to bookmark this one and wait anxiously for part 2, when that last bit came up that earmarked it as a one shot. Damnation, I say! This was too interesting to end so soon.

What a great story! Like you, I wonder just why Severus owed a debt the a man who had helped put in in jeopardy in the first place. Even if James didn't tell to go to the Shrieking Shack, he always encouraged Black in his stupidity and I always felt he saved Severus not to help him but to protect Black and Lupin.

I loved how the young Severus was free from Dumbledore's manipulations and that even Fawkes was willing to stand up for him. As for the ending, it was poignant that Severus was a good-hearted person, and if Dumbledore had treated him properly he would have made a loyal ally to the Order.
