Molloy chapter 4 . 7/26 Again, the Tom Clancy vibe continues to chug along. I knew immediately that this isn't high school Kim when she readily agreed to fake her daughter's death. The high school Kim would have needed to be convinced such drastic subterfuge was necessary. Grown up Kim is totally onboard instantly. A combination of the kind of things she's seen while working for GJ? Shego's influence? Both? I like how Kimminator's AI's name. I would imagine the phrase Kigo is not present in the universe where the characters themselves actually reside. So, that is a nice wink at the reader. What struck me the most in this chapter is how seemingly in control both Kim and Shego are. They don't know what Will's deal is but they are more than up for the challenge. Of course, that does lead to some tension for this reader. They have no idea about the Lorwardian angle. And silence from that crowd in this chapter makes me suspect that both the reader and the Possibles are in for a surprise from the aliens. I found it interesting that Shego took Kim's last name instead of the reverse or kept her own name. How did that come about? |
Molloy chapter 3 . 7/26 Highlight of this chapter was Shego punching Will. Not only because the reader knows about his evil intentions, but because of how she did it. Although her green skin and powers are what people notice first about her, intelligence is her true distinguishing characteristic. No yelling just a well-deserved insult to distract from the precision of (and motive for) her blow. I also like how the family dynamic is played out. They know how work together. Kim letting Shego keep information from her when the situation calls for it, for example. I also got the impression that Kim yelled at Shego after she punched Will more to stop her from finishing her insult than because of shock over what she had done. |
Molloy chapter 2 . 7/17 Although it has been three decades since I read anything by Tom Clancy, I get a definite late Cold War spy feeling from this story. The writing is clear and crisp. And the action is well paced. I find the decision to begin the story with an exciting set piece and then backtrack to show how the tumblers lined up for that event to occur an effective one. Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with NoDrogs work. However, you do a fine job of letting the reader know who everyone is, so any confusion I may have experience (i.e. Deven Chee is a Lorwardian?) was short-lived. Although they so far only make brief cameos, Kim and Shego sound in character. I especially liked Shego’s spicy Yiddish. The one thing I’d like to see a little more of is Kasy and Sheki personalities explored. Again, this is my fault since I haven’t read the stories that inspired this one, but I’d like to see how the Kim/Shego blend manifests differently in each of their children. Definitely interested to see what comes next. |
