CMY187 chapter 10 . 8/23 “I’m not the type of person to fall in love” Is anyone ever that type? “to not get hung up on words from nice girls” Sadly, too many men tend to fixate on ANY sort of positive interaction/reaction from women and assume that it means that the woman is ‘into’ them. One of the worst things about Hachiman being a cynical misanthrope with a general disdain for humanity is that he kind of has a point. “take every bit of kindness with a grain of salt” The guy really would make for one hell of an investigator. I love the moment in Oregairu in which he states that if a woman – upon being asked what she thinks of a man - says that she thinks the man is ‘nice’, it actually means that she has no interest in him whatsoever. “as he walked, side by side, with the beautiful Isshiki Iroha” Iroha is a ‘fake’ person, and at the same time she isn’t. She really is such a great character, and to me it makes perfect sense that Hachiman would have grown to like her. “to act any differently around him than she always had” She is able to just be ‘herself’ around him in a way that she is not with anybody else. “We talked about that all last night” Ha! “we went on a few practice dates in high school together” Out of his four love interests in Oregairu, Iroha is arguably the only one whom he has dated while in high school. I’m not sure if the outing with Yukino to find suitable birthday presents for Yui really counts. “the girl already had her hand around his wrist” Out of the four, Iroha is the one who seems to have the least problem with touching him while Yukino is arguably the one who has the most. Yukino and Hachiman are rivals, not friends, after all. Yes, I thought of Dragon Age 2. I honestly haven’t seen a system like the Friendship/Rivalry system anywhere else in video games. “They received some confused looks” I love that Hachiman has been seen all over town with Iroha. I wonder what the students of Sobu High think of their Student Council President spending so much time with her Senpai and current tutor. “After a moment of no response” I love Hachiman. “It’s not that I don’t wanna date you” I wonder what it would be like if Hachiman and Miura were to find themselves alone together. Miura is one of the most popular students of Sobu High…and Hachiman has no interest or feelings toward her whatsoever, good or bad. He is completely indifferent to her, and doesn’t even find her attractive. Knowing Miura, she’d probably just chalk it up to him being a ‘weirdo’. In Oregairu, it is stated that Miura is unable to empathize with loners due to her own popularity; she simply assumes that it is their own fault that they ‘cannot make friends’. (shrugs) Again, teenage girl…though in this story she is unlikely to have that excuse anymore. I wonder if Yui in this story is still in contact with the rest of Hayato’s clique. What if Hayato had gone to university only to repeat history in forming yet another number of superficial relationships into a clique that is only held together because he is in it? “leaning back into Hachiman’s chest with the swaying of the train” This story so far is filled with light-hearted and heart-warming moments…which is why I just know it isn’t going to last. Just look at the story’s title. Something is definitely going to go wrong for both Hachiman and Iroha. More than one of the tasks that the Service Club deals with in Oregairu end up turning ugly… “recognized a few faces from some of his basic lecture classes” …if Hachiman is seen spending time with other women as well as Iroha, rumors would certainly spread about him within his university. The guy is just doomed to not have a peaceful life. “Sounds rough, being too busy to stalk your own boyfriend” Yukino would certainly disapprove of this course of action. Iroha on the other hand has no problem with it. Now I’m imagining a scenario in which Iroha is in trouble with the law and Yukino is the lawyer representing her defense, and Yukino realizing despite Iroha’s words that the latter likely IS guilty of the alleged crime. “Were you about to say another name there?” Ha! “how would you feel if I started dating someone?” I thought of Machiko Mei in Love & Coffee, the Oregairu fanfic by GenericOregairuFan. “she turned the camera to face the couple, quickly flipping the view and zooming in” Iroha is good at this. I love it. “Collecting evidence” It is WAY too easy to imagine Iroha becoming a blackmailer in the future. That is a very dangerous profession. “she’d probably gotten pretty good at people watching” I grinned at this. Iroha is definitely scary. “Not so loud senpai!” I love that she can rile him up. “you should already know how I actually feel about you” He knows. He just doesn’t want to acknowledge it because, like with Yui and Yukino, acknowledging it but not doing anything about it would mean he is just behaving exactly like Hayato. “Katsuki looked a little deflated, but a couple words from the girl seemed to cheer him up” Hmm. They don’t really have proof of ANYTHING yet. If I were them, I would first try to learn more about the girl. “the two griped about how uninteresting their job had been” Yukino Disapproves. |
CMY187 chapter 9 . 8/22 “I want to help you solve this problem” She’s paranoid about Mitsuki, and for good reason. After all, her relationship with Hachiman was built on their interactions while he was helping her with her requests regarding the Student Council. “Social suicide isn’t something you can just shrug off in college” Iroha’s done her research. Wow, she’s thorough. “you won’t risk your reputation for this” Hachiman learned that doing that hurts the people he is closest to, and that it doesn’t even really solve the long-term problem of the requestor(s). Still, old habits die hard… “I’m more dependable than I used to be, and I want to help you” She wants to be a part of his life, and knows that fulfilling requests and tasks from others is an important aspect of that. “Am I no good?” I thought of Yukino’s self-confidence being damaged by Hachiman’s methods in the Service Club. “It was just a small, heartfelt, smile…genuine happiness” I wonder what Maya thought when/if she saw Iroha smiling like that while thinking of Hachiman. “trying to hide her smile” I love that she one hundred percent approves of Hachiman. What if Iroha had introduced Hayato to her? What would she have thought of the top sportsman and student of Sobu High? “leaving the door open a crack” Ha! “This mother. I swear” Seriously, Maya just steals every single scene she is in. There were Hachiman and Iroha having a heartfelt and emotional moment and she just walks in and takes the spotlight. That is just devious and selfish! She certainly is the mother of Isshiki Iroha. “we should get back to studying” If Iroha were to do very well in her school exams and state that she had/has a very good tutor, it may lead to Hachiman receiving more tutoring requests from other high school students. (looks at Tsurumi Rumi) Huh. “reading is a great escape from the world, but it also serves to broaden your horizons” I agree. “odd to know the person writing a series you liked” I thought of Tomoya Aki and Utaha Kasumigaoka in How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend. “isn’t this character based off of me” I thought of a hilarious chapter of Hayate no Gotoku in which Sanzenin Nagi writes a terribly-written-and-drawn manga in which every single character is an expy of the people she knows. “could Iroha study at your place” Honestly, how many more chapters and scenes is Maya gonna steal? ItsJustBread, did you realize how entertaining a character she was going to become when you started writing her? “Every fiber of each of their beings instinctively knows how to set me up” I want Maya to meet the Kawasaki mom. “Hachiman’s eyes narrowed as he looked at his student” I love their relationship. Iroha is my favorite Oregairu character for a reason. “she had created checklists for each of the members to complete” She really has proven to be an outstanding Student Council President. “where are you going?” The Student Council are going to follow and spy on Iroha while she is with Hachiman, aren’t they? “definitely can’t handle on his own” She is genuinely worried that he may only make that situation worse. “Rikyu hung onto that word with concern” You SHOULD be concerned Rikyu. Unfortunately, it may now be too late to do anything about it. “The girl’s words didn’t match up with the giddy aura she gave off” Man, all this really is Hachiman’s fault. “tell my brother I said hi” Komachi is pure evil. “excited to hear about the boy again” Why do I get the feeling that Taishi in this story probably went to and told his older sister that she needs to buck up before she loses her chance to get the person she loves? “If you see him that is” Still evil. “with a sweet and innocent smile on her face” I cackled at this. “the curious and judgmental stares” Seriously, how dead-looking are his eyes? However, while most would find them off-putting, others may find them to be attractive in a twisted sort of way. To quote what is arguably the most popular Oregairu fanfic, ‘He wasn’t dashingly handsome…but somewhat predatory and dangerous’. And here’s another quote: ‘My mother always told me I should look for someone gallant, dashing, and heroic! N-not someone cunning, self-assured, and a-aggressive!’ “denim hoodie…white shorts…a pair of yellow sneakers” Being male, I don’t think I can empathize or understand the amount of thought and consideration that women put into choosing clothing. “receive any suspicious glances of people curious why a college student was waiting outside a high school” This made me laugh. “to make herself look older” She’s really taking this task seriously. They will be following and watching someone and don’t want to draw attention to themselves. Iroha’s a smart person. “a virus through a herd of cattle” Hachiman’s a jerk. I love him. “Must’ve had poor signal” I love this story. “If any of my friends would look at me differently” In Oregairu, Miura Yumiko does not like that Yui spends time in the Service Club instead of with her and Hayato’s clique. It didn’t help that Yui ended up spending more time with Yukino and Hachiman and began drifting away from the clique. “this chapter went like 12 different ways during the writing process” (looks at Unmade by SouBU) I think SouBU can relate to that. |
PsYchRoxx chapter 14 . 8/20 Another great chapter, it's fine to introduce some drama into the story but I think why people are hesistant of it when it comes to fanfics is they tend to really stretch a story if not well-thought out and the writers tend to back themselves into a corner narrative wise and then lose motivation to complete the story so just keep that in mind. Looking forward to what comes next! |
draculyn28 chapter 14 . 8/18 good chapter |
CMY187 chapter 8 . 8/18 “I got here early” I thought of Hachiman and Iroha’s first ‘practice’ date in which he bluntly told her that he had been kept waiting for her to show up. “have a book to read” Are there any Oregairu fanfics in which Hachiman is an author whose characters are inspired/based off of the other Oregairu characters? Love & Coffee by GenericOregairuFan is the closest thing to that. “too absorbed in the pages of the novel” I smiled at this. Hachiman is one of the top students of Sobu High in Japanese History and Literature for a reason. “Ah. Is it Totsuka…a lukewarm reaction” I cackled at this. Hachiman keeps Iroha on her toes, doesn’t he? Just like their table tennis match. “Death in Midsummer” I thought of Rust Cohle in True Detective. “Do you like her?” Iroha does not want to push him. She knows that if she pressures him, Hachiman being Hachiman may grow to feel that their relationship isn’t ‘real’. However, her patience is not limitless. Sooner or later they would have to confront the very obvious issue that is right in front of their faces. “I’m just a tutor for her, I’m useful right now” He’s lying to himself, AND HE KNOWS IT. “if you’d mind dating the girl you aren’t dating” He already loves her, but he does not want to acknowledge it, to her or to himself. “what was with that pause” Figures. So many young men have confessed to her, yet the one whom she wants to be with wouldn’t. This is someone who is fully aware of how selfish, manipulative and self-serving she can be, yet not only accepts those qualities but even likes them; he sees the ‘real’ her and likes that person. “The pout reached extremes” I love this. The table tennis match they had in the Season 2 OVA is so damn funny. “Declined an invitation to a mixer” Iroha is probably admired by a lot of people in Sobu High. At the same time, in Oregairu (in which she is a first-year student), the other girls in her class made her a candidate for the Student Council President election as a joke/prank, which led to her approaching the Service Club and meeting Hachiman, Yui and Yukino for the first time. “she wanted to marry rich and live as a housewife” Now that I think about it, Hachiman is (if I am correct) the ONLY person in Oregairu whom Iroha told of her true motivation to ‘win’ Hayato; marry into money and luxury. I love that Hachiman’s reaction to that was to nonchalantly shrug (so to speak). A typical nice-guy protagonist would have protested, disapproved of or opposed Iroha’s goal. “people can change!...Ah, sure sure” This right here is what started the rivalry between Hachiman and Yukino; their opposing belief regarding the capacity of people to change. Yukino believes that everyone can change for the better if they would only put in the effort and if others put in effort to help and guide them. The misanthropic and cynical Hachiman on the other hand believes that people never truly change. Gregory House: ‘People don’t change. They just become more of who they really are.’ “if I could get a scholarship” In my opinion, Hachiman’s interactions with Iroha have caused her to realize that what she truly wanted all along was not money or luxury but to be loved for who she truly is. She usually puts up a front around others after all. “settled into her curriculum pretty well” While there are other prospective careers for Yukinoshita Yukino, my personal pick for her is lawyer. She would go far in a profession like that, though I wonder if she would prefer to be a prosecution or a defense lawyer. “Yui on the other hand” Journalist. That’s the future career I keep thinking of when I look at Yuigahama Yui. In my opinion she’d be a surprisingly good one, with perhaps the most surprised person being herself. (looks at Iroha) Criminal. No, I mean it. “Suddenly rigid” I love this. Mrs Isshiki is the best. “planned his escape route” Ha! “cute little Komachi-chan” Let me guess; Maya can see right through Komachi and discern the girl’s true character and personality. “Ah yes, she is cute” Hachiman would be handsome if not for his dead eyes. And Iroha liked him from the moment she first saw him. (shrugs) Iroha’s a strange person. Maybe she just found him interesting/intriguing and not yet another good-looking boy. “all he was met with was a cold, cruel, cautioning gaze” Iroha knows that intervening would only make it worse. She just cannot win against her mom. Man, now I just want an entire story centered around Iroha’s childhood with her parents. Sociopathic and manipulative yet ALSO self-aware? How does one raise a child to be like that? Iroha is a dangerous person! “without so much as batting an eye” That woman is pure evil. “Has Iroha always had that sweatshirt” She can see it clear as day; Iroha isn’t merely exploiting Hachiman for her own gain. She genuinely likes and values his company. “none of the three of them had been in a longer term relationship” Dang, they really aren’t the right people to talk to about this problem, are they? “a little hesitant to help at first” It COULD feel like Hachiman is leaving them behind; going on to fulfill requests without them after they all left the Service Club. “I feel like I’d be on the menu” My Psychological Crime Thriller SNAFU. An Oregairu/Hannibal crossover. I dearly hope that the author would resume it. Please send reviews its way to encourage and inspire them! “Hachiman had always felt like the exception to that” I grinned at this. “She looks like Gendo!” Iroha having watched Evangelion makes way too much sense. “There’s no pretending to be her boyfriend” You mean like what you did to Hachiman in high school, Iroha? “Let me help” She’s suspicious, and why wouldn’t she be? Mitsuki went to Hachiman’s apartment alone. “no longer asks for help, but rather to help” The criminal playing the cop. I like it. Iroha: ‘You break into the house and find the laptop, I’ll apprehend and interrogate the suspect.’ SakI: ‘Shouldn’t we be switching roles for this?’ |
srarplus19 chapter 14 . 8/18 Emotions and characters are apart. It doesn't feel like it connects them. Some grammar errors. Conversations are a bit mundane. I stick with this story, hoping for some improvements. At least future chapters might have some complexity. |
Srarplus19 chapter 14 . 8/18 I don't like to criticize fics that are popular. But someone had to say it. The characters feel like they are void. Even though you pointing out emotions, it doesn't seem to mash with the character. Simply put, the emotions and the characters are not connected. Your grammar is terrible. Someone else may have stated it already, but I don't see any improvements on the story so far. Their life is also very mundane. These won't be even selected for a everyday life story. This review had to be done. Other reviewers suck for not doing their job. |
Kokiks100 chapter 14 . 8/17 Nice chapter as always. Iroha and Hachiman's relationship is vecoming more platonic as the chapters go by and Im absolutely loving it. Also Good to know that you don't get affected by negative comments. |

Rinto chapter 14 . 8/16 I really like all this Iroha stuff. Thanks for my regular dose of fluffy Iroha stuffing. |
CMY187 chapter 7 . 8/14 “I need your advice” I’ve been watching Season 3 of Lucifer, and it got me wondering what the owner of the Lux nightclub in Los Angeles would think of the Service Club in Sobu High. “No, I think there are a couple missing steps there” Ha! I love Hachiman. “Are you just going to leave a crying girl in front of your door?!” Don’t tempt him, lady. Quoting Episode 4 of the Sword Art Online Abridged series: Kirito: ‘Well, I can see you’ve got your own thing going here. Don’t want to intrude. I’ll just find myself a spot that isn’t full of crying children.’ “all the while trying to recall the girl’s name” Imagine being the most popular/famous/well-known person in your society and this one person neither knows nor cares who you are. “He took the pan of boiling water off the burner…switched the burner off and set his electric kettle to boil” I wonder if people find attraction in the other person living alone and looking after themselves. In Oregairu, Yukino lives alone in her own apartment. To be fair, she is wealthy. Saki really wasn’t kidding when she said that there are things that poor and middle-class people go through that Yukino could never grasp nor understand. And Saki doesn’t even dislike Yukino. “You’re very blunt” Mitsuki finds Hachiman to be attractive. That’s interesting considering that Hachiman does not tend to make a good first impression on others. At the same time, she may simply be emotionally vulnerable due to her problems with her boyfriend and may be in a ‘rebound’ mindset. “I actually thought you were creepy before…never trying to interact with anyone” Mitsuki approached him first. Why? “wait how is this my business?” Like Gregory House, Hachiman likes puzzles. “Forced to sit on the floor in my own house” I love this. Hachiman should get a one-person comfy chair. Then he’d be a (unlicensed) therapist. “I heard that in high school you gave really good advice” Who did she hear this from? Also, most of Hachiman’s advice and methods in the Service Club solved short-term problems but not long-term ones. Rumi remains ostracized despite his actions during the Summer Camp. “not to mention the fact that…you have such a cute girlfriend” Word’s gotten around about Hachiman and Iroha. “For someone on the outside looking in” Hayato both despises and respects Hachiman. “She must be crazy!” You don’t know Hachiman, Mitsuki, at least not at this point. He is a very flawed and not a good person (I still say his alignment is Neutral), but he is someone who would be an attentive, considerate and loving boyfriend or husband. “You were just so easy to talk to” Ebina and Iroha find that they could just ‘be themselves’ when they are interacting with Hachiman rather than have to put up a façade. “I really can’t handle girls that cry” Dude, you made Sagami cry and you enjoyed it. That moment in Oregairu really highlighted that there is a cruel and horrific side to Hikigaya Hachiman. It’s one of the reasons that he is such a great character; he is anything but a typical nice-guy protagonist. “do you like her” Mitsuki, you are awfully interested in Hachiman’s love life. That or you just enjoy gossip. “You’re so nice! Nothing like my Ka-kun!” You REALLY don’t know Hachiman, Mitsuki. “I doubt a crush like that would just up and vanish” But it did, Hachiman. And nobody was more surprised by it than Iroha herself. When Hayato rejected her confession, Iroha realized in that moment that she was not broken up by it; she no longer fancied the Sobu High ace. “we haven’t always been happy, we always got through it” Quoting S01E04 of Mindhunter: Bill Tench: ‘When you’re married, it’s a contract. There’s children, a mortgage, a house to keep up, almost like a business. Only you can’t quit. She can’t fire you. Stock goes up, stock goes down, doesn’t matter, you’re trapped. Unless you want to bring on the lawyers and open Pandora’s box. Resentment builds on both sides. A thousand tiny cuts.’ “a girl we knew in high school…one that I always thought liked him” So not a relative such as a cousin. Why would Mitsuki’s boyfriend be spending time with her? “The story just seemed to keep getting more and more cliché” Sherlock Holmes in the BBC Sherlock series: ‘Boring.’ (walks away) “in his third year, they had received a couple cases that were something like ‘love-advice’ that Komachi and Yui had handled” Interesting. Also, yeah, Komachi is always the protagonist of her own story. “do I look like a private investigator” Yes you do, Hachiman. Your entire character screams ‘investigator’, ‘detective’ and ‘consultant’. All you need is a deerstalker hat and a smoking pipe. This first case for Mitsuki may only be the beginning, and Hachiman may develop a reputation in college as someone who could uncover truths and secrets, which would be both good and bad for him. The question is which would be more and which would be less. “you could exchange notes with him or talk to him” Reminds me of my favorite moment in the Telltale Batman series; Bruce Wayne having three options (the fourth one being silence) to tell John Doe how to learn more about someone; talk to them, listen to them, or spy on them. “You want me to spy on your boyfriend” I thought of Jessica Jones. “she reminded him of Yui” Dammit, Hachiman. “After his time in the service club, Hachiman found it hard to turn away people in need” Hachiman discovered in the club that he has a talent and liking for human puzzles. “the girl was already gone” What was that for, Mitsuki? “She hummed along happily” She has been seen going around town with a man and now she is visibly happier to everyone around her. “so she was wearing Hachiman’s sweatshirt” I thought of Iroha deliberately showing the photo of her and Hachiman on their practice date to Yui and Yukino. “if she knew it was her brother’s” She knows. “if Komachi found out that she was crushing on her brother” Iroha, Komachi already knows. She had known from the start. “the number of couples that had been created on Komachi’s whims during the girl’s freshman year” Wait, what? Okay, that settles it, Komachi is evil. “Time was moving much too slowly” Because she wants to spend time with her Senpai. “The first of the three to arrive” Here we go, the Student Council of Sobu High. I like it. “with dyed blonde hair” Influenced by the former high school ace Hayama Hayato perhaps? “the secretary and VP. Komachi and Taishi” Those two have been good friends since at least middle school. I wonder if Saki would support Taishi if he were to romantically pursue Komachi. “the two transferred from the service club” I am very curious as to who may be in the Service Club now. In my opinion, anybody who would join and stay in a club like that is likely to be an interesting person. Still, I doubt there has been a more interesting club member than Hikigaya Hachiman. “You seem especially happy today” He has a crush on Iroha, doesn’t he? “their ideal picks for representation of each of the classrooms” I’ll bet Komachi gets a kick out of this job. “she gave off a very cheerful aura” Iroha realizing the full extent of her feelings for Hachiman is one of the most important scenes of this story in my opinion. “a little deflated…missing the context” Ha! “Splashing happily through puddles all the way” Man, she really, really does have it bad for Hachiman. |
PsYchRoxx chapter 13 . 8/13 I've read so many fanfics of this show and honestly this one of the best Binged it all in one sitting, please don't give this up like so many other stories end up, I'd really like to see this through! Can not WAIT for the next one! |
BlinDead chapter 13 . 8/13 An update would be great!, Your work is appreciated. |
