At least Shaina is still learning so she can do well at the railway. That Bugly is such a bully, all he cares about himself and wants his passengers to love him, and this is why he doesn't have any friends because he is so mean. Mrs. Songbird, I've quite both this and "Chirstmas Tracks" Quite a lot! So, I do know a good chunk about railroads and steam locomotives, so to help you out with your next chapter, let me run you through the basics of how a steam locomotive's controls are. (Please note: I'm most familiar with the American Terminology, So I'll be using that. However, I will note the British Terminology for the little I do know on that front.)
So, Let me run you down through the basic controls:

Throttle (US) /Regulator (UK): Controls the Speed of a locomotive, similar to a gas pedal on a car.

Independent Brake: Used specifically to brake the locomotive itself, not the train.

Train Brake: Used to Brake the entire train. This is done using either air brakes on American Locomotives, or Vaccum Brakes on a British Locomotive.

Johnson Bar: Controls the Locomotives Direction. It's similar to a gear shift on an automobile. The Center Position puts the locomotive in "Neutral". You pull the bar away or towards you to control your direction of travel.

Water/Sight Glass: Indicates the water level in the boiler.

Water Injector: Injects the Water from the water tank in the tender to the boiler.
