Reviews for Silent in the Rain
AcheronThirteen chapter 1 . 4/10
This was a good read. I agree that Lavinia and the Avoxes as a whole are underused both in canon and in fics. I'm glad to see some background be given to her character, especially with her being one with such a horrid backstory and end to her life. Unfortunately though, many people in Panem could fit that description.
I wonder how it was that Syrio found out about the rebels and the existence of District 13. I've also got to wonder what his and Lavinia's situation was in the Capitol, as so many Capitolites have such an easy, lax life. Perhaps they were in trouble with someone and were looking to get away from that?
It's sad, how Lavinia's last words seem to be asking her late brother what to do next, especially with how miserable and lost she feels after being Avoxed. Just a box of tools, huh? I always figured Avoxing was done in a more sterile environment, though the contrary could make sense, as the Capitol would surely want Avoxes to feel the pain of the mutilation.
I'm glad to see you didn't reference Katniss as District 12's first "ever" volunteer. I ignore a lot of canon, but the fact that Katniss is one of few volunteers from 12 rather than the only one is an aspect I've always paid attention to. People suggesting she's the first in 74 years of Games just irks me I guess. Interesting to see that Lavinia recognized Katniss as much as the reverse was true.
Makes sense that a tortured person like Lavinia would expect the Quarter Quell. It's good to see too that despite her struggles, Lavinia has maintained her humanity.
Love the mention of Johanna (mainly just cause she's my favorite), though it's interesting to see how Lavinia thinks that Johanna is so much stronger than her, even though earlier she said that Avoxes are slightly more unlucky than tributes. It would make sense to me that Lavinia would invalidate her hardships a bit though. The comparison of Lavinia and Annie is good as well. I've never thought of it honestly, but they are indeed similar in several senses. Was Lavinia really so isolated though that she didn't recognize Annie as a Victor nor Finnick's name? I suppose she just didn't pay attention to the Games when they were on. Or perhaps as an Avox she was serving the Mentors while the Games play out? She doesn't know Johanna's name either. Either way, it seems as though Lavinia hasn't paid much attention to the Games, or at least not in a while.
So, Lavinia dies before Darius. That must be why Darius's execution was so drawn out. Makes sense. I'm glad to see that Lavinia got some sort of peace in death, believing that she'll have a voice to be heard in whatever comes after life. The few descriptions of her tongue throughout the piece are just the right amount of grotesque. The mentions of rain and the effect it has on Lavinia is powerful too. Something as simple as rain can become so torturous for someone under the dare I say "right" circumstances.
This was a great read, and it was great to get more perspective on Lavinia.
Hailey Mockingjay chapter 1 . 4/8
This is great! I have never read a story about Lavinia. I loved how you were able to capture her personality.
