Reviews for Hikigaya Hachiman, MD
YuukiAsuna-Chan chapter 1 . 3/25
I dont know, he seems to be a straight up copy/paste of House. Bad leg, cane, addiction to pills, attitude. Yeah he just a renames House.
CMY187 chapter 1 . 1/30
“Hikigaya Hachiman, MD”
When I saw this story title, a grin slowly spread across my face until it was ear to ear.

I will review the story summary first:
“Medical AU”
An AU? How is it an alternate universe? Is Oregairu-Canon events completely or partially omitted/deviated away from? (Unmade by SouBU is written to have taken place after Volume 12 of the light novel series, disregarding Volume 13 and 14) I look forward to finding out.
I’ll say it now, yahallo: In my opinion, it may be best NOT to spell out/summarize/describe the entire backstories of any of the characters in one chapter, least of all Hachiman (Sage-of-Eyes’ Oregairu/Danmachi crossover has as of Chapter 23 not gone into a lot of detail on what Hachiman went through in Orario in the two years leading up to him first meeting Bell Cranel) Like in the House MD TV series, the viewer gets to learn more about House gradually, piece by piece, over time. I think that doing the same with this story would be ideal. But again, it’s just my recommendation/opinion.
“becomes the world’s top Diagnostician”
…so not just Japan. Hachiman in this story is the very best. Number One, not Two or Three.
What sets him apart from other brilliant diagnosticians, people who are geniuses in their own right? I look forward to this story exploring that. I love that in this story, he is (apparently) world-famous.
“who solves cases no other doctors can”
I am very curious to learn as I read this story; what led Hachiman (and Yukino) into the medical field? What brought them away from Chiba and to Tokyo, the capital city of Japan? And what made them rise to the top of their respective professions?
“Tokyo University Hospital”
Hmm. I looked it up, and there seem to be three real-life ones with similar names; The University of Tokyo Hospital, Tokyo Medical University Hospital, and Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital.
Still, I’m keeping in mind two things:
1) This is not a documentary. It’s a fictional story, and I should treat it as such.
2) Tokyo is not New Jersey, and Japan is not the USA. (looks at My Psychological Crime Thriller SNAFU by he who watches the world burn) Yep.
“Yukinoshita Yukino”
Hmm. If at least some of Oregairu-Canon took place in this story, it would mean that the former clubmates of the Service Club in Sobu High in Chiba are now working together in the same hospital, in Tokyo no less. If so…what happened to the others? To Yui, Kawasaki, Iroha, Hayato, Shizuka?
And if NOT…that just makes things more intriguing in my opinion. There is a LOT of mystery and potential in a story like this. It could become something very different from both House MD and Oregairu. I like it.
“he races against the clock to save lives”
This is not the Service Club. It isn’t dealing with the social problems/dilemmas of teenagers.
‘It is in the nature of medicine that you are gonna screw up. You are gonna kill someone. If you can't handle that reality, pick another profession. Or finish medical school and teach.’ – House MD S01E21, ‘Three Stories.’
“How did his life change course so drastically”
You’re cruelly baiting and teasing us, yahallo. Hmph. The skilled writers always seem to be evil.
“the former Service Club President”
Ah-ha, so the Service Club DID exist in this story! Which means...man, there must be a lot of rumors and gossip floating around the hospital as to the relationship and history between the Dean and the Diagnostic department head.

Alright, that’s the summary done. Time to review Chapter 1:

“one month ago”
Wait, what? Hm. I’m guessing that she’s undergone multiple examinations, possibly treatments, all to no avail, and the case is finally finding its way into Yukino and Hachiman’s hands.
“Tap. Tap. Tap”
Is Stealth-Hikki still effective now, or is it much more difficult for Hachiman to go unseen in a crowd?
“finally deciding to contribute”
Hachiman is observant and sharp-minded. And Yukino isn’t stupid; she wouldn’t have brought this case to him if she didn’t think that it would amount to nothing.
“The Dean of Medicine walking beside me”
Not James Wilson. Instead, this story opens with the Dean assigning Hachiman to the case. I wonder what it would be like for the former school-mates in a new dynamic; Yukino is technically Hachiman’s boss now. And if they are/were in love with each other in high school…damn, this story has too much potential.
“raised an eyebrow to my offtopic response”
I’m guessing that this either doesn’t happen very often or Hachiman usually doesn’t call attention to his disability.
“Your rotten eyes disqualify you from having the appearance of a doctor anyway”
I love this. Even without his disability Hachiman would still be a disconcerting sight.
“I don’t want them to think I’m a doctor”
I love this too. Lifted from the episode, but yeah, Hachiman would say something like this too.
“I hope you aren’t still clinging to”
Is there anything that Yukino is still clinging to from her child/teenhood?
“become a full-time house husband”
I wonder if any of Hachiman’s other colleagues are aware of this.
“Are you offering?”
Teenage-Hachiman wouldn’t make jokes like this. I’m loving this story more with every paragraph. There’s so much that can be done with an Oregairu story in which the characters are adults. In my opinion, Unmade by SouBU is currently the best one, but this one just might end up giving it a run for its money.
“finally setting in her gaze”
She has more patience with Hachiman than most would. By the way, I’ve always found Lisa Cuddy to be an interesting character. However, Yukino is not Cuddy, and Hachiman is not House.
“She’s gonna die. Boring”
Hachiman has likely had to deal with death before, being a medical professional. This isn’t high school anymore.
“So this is how Hikigaya-kun became such a world renowned diagnostician”
Hmm. Does Yukino herself know? And Hachiman being world-renowned? DAMMIT, too much! Yahallo, I’m saying it now; I recommend that you put this story on other websites like Spacebattles or Questionable Questing. Why? Because I’m hoping that it would lead to Omakes.
“Just like they did in the Service Club”
Our uniforms, or the problems we’ve solved
All these habits can’t be changed
by something small like this
These days are the best
But pointless in the least
We’ll continue to cherish
These times before they’re gone
To save these feelings of
peacefulness when I stay here
We keep trying to see through
To the clearer truth
In all the strangest way… - Everyday World.
“She’s 29”
House is 45 years old in the pilot episode. He was born on 11 June, 1959. (looks at the characters of this story) Hmm. If Hachiman is younger than 45 – in his early 30s or even in his late 20s – considering that he is world-renowned and THE best diagnostician in the world…
“There was no family history”
Everybody Lies.
“a familiar clenching in my leg”
I cringed at this. House’s disability is nothing short of horrifying. Imagine being in CONSTANT pain, all the time, every day. House states in the final season of the TV series that he has contemplated suicide many times.
“heavy condemnation of”
I wonder what Japanese society in general thinks of heavy drug use.
“never a friend”
They were rivals in high school, not friends; they opposed and fought against each other’s beliefs and convictions. And they also loved – and may still love – each other.
“enough to impassion”
In Oregairu, Yukino becomes notably more animated and talkative when Hachiman is around.
“normally mild-mannered, if sharp-tongued”
I wonder where Haruno is in this story; in my opinion, Haruno is the most important person in Yukino’s life, not their parents or Yui or Hachiman.
“numerous shouting matches”
She still cares for him, and also for the people he works with and the patients whose cases he is assigned to. Yukino seems to still be driven/motivated to try to make the world a better place. It is clear, however, that they are both still damaged, perhaps even more so than when they were in high school. They (and Yui) made each other both better and worse.
“As the years went on”
Oh, so Hachiman and Yukino have been working together for years. In Tokyo and/or the same hospital? Probably.
“I wouldn’t be able to walk, talk, think, all things that I unfortunately needed to do this job”
Gregory House is an only job. Hachiman is not, and his only other sibling is the most important person in his life, the only positive relationship he had for years until he met Shizuka and Zaimokuza, and someone whom he loves more than anyone on Earth, even the four girls he was close to in high school (Yui, Yukino, Iroha and Kawasaki)
Speaking of the four girls, I’m going to share another recommendation/preference, yahallo:
In my opinion, it wouldn’t fit (and probably seem downright silly and make the story bloated as well as reduce its scope and potential) to write most or all of the Oregairu characters to have occupations in the medical field. Like I said; this story has the potential to be bigger than both House MD and Oregairu combined.
You know what, I’ll share my own personal takes/picks/predictions on what careers the Oregairu characters would have:
Hachiman – Private Investigator.
Yui – Journalist.
Yukino – Lawyer.
Iroha – Criminal (possibly with a ‘regular’ job that serves as a front for her criminal activities)
Kawasaki – Policewoman, possibly with the rank of Detective.
Hayato – Politician, or Actor (or both!)
Just wanted to share this. (Iroha is apparently a businesswoman in SouBU’s Unmade) Alright, back to the review.
“without the painkillers, my only career possibility”
…wow, really? Then again, Hachiman is a notoriously unreliable narrator. Hm, why did I look at Max Payne? (a painkiller-addicted and alcoholic policeman)
“I have to admit, the prospect was appealing”
It seems that Hachiman is still (mutually?) attracted to Yukino.
“my chastity”
Huh. Has Yukino had any boyfriends or lovers since high school?
“The playful side of her was back”
Does she have any friends in or beyond the hospital, or is she still a loner into adulthood?
“May I ask what the purpose of”
Who is responsible for creating the Department of Diagnostic Medicine? How long has it been around? If for years, how long have teams been implemented? Yeah, this story has too much potential. I recommend taking your time to plan and outline it, yahallo.
“over-qualified doctors”
Oregairu characters or OCs? I’m fine with either, though if I have to pick, I’d pick OCs. But this is your story, yahallo; you decide what happens in it.
“admitting she can’t solve a case?”
Now THIS is an interesting story-aspect; that Yukino is a brilliant doctor herself, yet Hachiman is arguably just as good if not better than her. If so, this means that things have really changed since high school in which Yukino is one of the Top 2 students of Sobu High while Hachiman – despite being one of the Top 5 in History, Literature and Japanese Language – is awful in math and science.
“Now, I’m interested”
Dammit, so THAT’S what made Hachiman take the case; Yukino clearly has already tried to solve it by herself and failed. I love this.
“flashed back to me in surprise”
It’s nice to know that Hachiman can still surprise Yukino after all this time. No wonder she fell for him in high school. But…this isn’t high school, and they are no longer teenagers. Youth is a Lie.
“seven words were drawn”
His own department. Hachiman has come a long way since high school. I wonder what his family and peers think of that. (looks at Komachi) It is hinted in Oregairu that for all her cheery and jovial demeanor, Komachi may actually be just as cynical and misanthropic as Hachiman, with the only difference being that she is better at hiding it. She is just as much of a fascinating character as her brother.
“I opened the door and limped in”
In Oregairu, what Hachiman wants more than anything else in the world is to have something genuine. Yukino, Yui and Iroha know it (and I suspect that Kawasaki does as well; in my opinion, out of the four girls she is most similar to Hachiman in terms of personality and character. And while Hachiman tries to be a loner but deep down wishes to be loved and cherished, Kawasaki is much more of a natural loner; she just prefers solitude to social interaction, though she can and does have friendships in Oregairu such as with Ebina Hina)
“the relationships of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine”
You’ve clearly put a lot of thought into this. I look forward to following this story.
“That will lead to personality differences. I don’t plan on making Hikigaya a one-for-one cut of House”
I approve of this. I love Greg House, but this makes for a much better story.
KievVrael245 chapter 1 . 1/29
The most unrealistic part of this is Yukino being "chaste" at 29. Otherwise, great story.
faust79 chapter 1 . 1/28
Quite interesting :)
Afan chapter 1 . 1/24
Wow this looks promising and interesting! Although I don't know what House is ? Is it a TV series? Anyway good job. Thank you.
Clipsus chapter 1 . 1/25
I just hope it's not lupus
lol chapter 1 . 1/23

if so thenn good
keep up the good work
LLynnTempest chapter 1 . 1/24
House M.D inspired , i love it ,
but well can i ask ? does H.H is an asshole like Gregory?
TheGenesis chapter 1 . 1/24
(I don't speak English, so forgive any mistakes)

I very like.

Please, do not abandon history, that this "crossing" has a lot of potential.

And the truth is that yes: Here you will have many more readers. Unless the idea is very attractive or you write or crossroads with Danmachi and maybe Persona, I don't see a humble story having a great reception.

Those two fandoms are usually very active and eager for stories, for some reason.
Mzhunterver2.0 chapter 1 . 1/24
Take my damn fav you bastard!

On the plus side, no idea what crossover that is but Yukino and Hachiman's interaction was fun as heck.
Arantir chapter 1 . 1/24
now this is one interesting crossover
BlackPsych chapter 1 . 1/23
Canon Hachiman's kind of snarky, so I could maybe see him taking up the "House" role. But Yukino fits super well as "Cuddy": a stickler for the rules, hot, and always nagging her best doctor for his unorthodox methods/attitude. I guess if you really wanted to bring back Yui as well, she'd fit well into the "Cameron" role. Those two characters would be peas in a pod, but I can't see Yui as a doctor or Hachiman choosing her to be a part of his team, unless it's for a good reason. Not sure who'd fit in as Chase or Foreman, really. House also butt heads with Foreman about his methods many times over and Chase is a pretty boy, so maybe their characters would be blended into Hayato? Ehh.

Shizuka would be the most Wilson-like character of the Oregairu cast, since she was always Hachiman's biggest supporter. She's already a teacher though. I think it's alright if you don't put this in a crossover section. I mean, you'll get more traffic here. It's cool to see Hachiman as a professional expert in his field, while retaining his character. Even having evolved as genius, he's still held back by SOMETHING. Damn limp and Vicodin addiction. Looking forward to more!
Fernando917 chapter 1 . 1/23
I like it, I only read it for a few seconds and I already laugh and with that I already have my stamp of approval
