I have been doing research for the last month regarding my story. If this is around 1870,they were becoming aware of cleanliness and spreading diseases, it wasn't easy the wealthy had access to plumbing and Seattle had 2 municipal water plants at this time so I think the town had some running water supplied. So hand washing was a probable suggestion for the doctor. I am enjoying your story and look forward to future chapters.
