Just found this story and love it.

Very much looking forward to more of this. I only watched the first two episodes of the show years ago, so reading it is a new experience. You're doing a good job of filling out the details so I can imagine the world. Somehow reading an SI kicking ass in the "real world" is very satisfying.

There are a lot of things you can do with compression. Not sure what they came up with in the show, but I like to brainstorm.

Codecs for physical and digital media. Integrate the compression directly into new video and audio codecs and rapidly replace things like H.264/265 and VP9.

Data storage obviously, both long term and active use. What company wouldn't want to reduce their storage costs by huge margin. Imagine all of the security camera systems in the world that would benefit from having footage take up a fraction of the space. Data centers. Tape backups.

Game companies would love it. Both distributors and creators. You can fit much more into the same disc or installation, while for companies like Steam a lot of their overhead is bandwidth and storage.

The successor to Blu-ray would have much higher quality and can fit much more video.

Would it be possible to team up with a hardware manufacturer to integrate compression directly into the hardware? Imagine the new iPhone having multiple times the storage as before because the hardware controller for the solid state storage is automatically compressing and decompressing on the fly. Same for Western Digital and other drive manufacturers.

You've already mentioned leaning into live video chat in the future. Getting the jump on companies like Discord and Zoom should be relatively easy. VOIP and video calls at a fraction of the bandwidth. Licence with Twitch too to massively lower their costs and increase their quality.

Could this compression be added to low level communication protocols? For example, maybe the 5G implementation in this world includes Pied Piper's compression at the base level making it so much quicker. Or maybe a new Wifi standard such as 802.11pp.

I have never seen the series but reading this fic was real fun. From what I gathered so far I believe I will be left disappointed of I go and watch the series now as this plot is more awesome.
