Reviews for The New Gambit
ZackVyle chapter 10 . 7/5
This story has been a blessing(if I’m using that word correctly). A refreshing taste from the others I’ve read.
Thank you for making such a story and I hope you continue to work on it. :))
But of course take your needed breaks whenever you can, your health is a top priority.
ZackVyle chapter 9 . 7/5
About the player(us if we sided with the Drifter), we could teach Jaune how to use his sword. Or a video of guardians fighting with a sword or a simulation of guardians using swords to let Jaune be better at it?
Someguy the anon chapter 10 . 7/1
hey maybe showing kindness to the taken will lower their chances of struggling under Drifter's will.
dragofist07 chapter 10 . 6/23
Something that was mentioned in the last chapter was malfeasance, but I think the girls of RWBY would integrate the tech with their own weapons. Imagine Ruby shooting a shot that would not only penetrate a target, but also cause corrosive damage, or Yang getting to infuse herself with fire dust (she basically is almost there anyways) when her anger interacts with the dark properties of her upgraded weapons. Drifter would have the people keep their fighting style, though an omake of them receiving the various pieces of loot would be absolutely hilarious.
Konerok Hadorak chapter 10 . 3/16
Well, I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed your story! I, and I wager many other readers, generally dislike when established characters of Destiny are used as the main characters in fanfictions, simply because most people aren't very good at capturing their personality and diction, instead focusing on the character's stereotype and (poorly) improvising the rest. Drifter in this story is actually written well enough for me to believe that it's actually THE Drifter I'm reading about and not YOUR Drifter, and that is an achievement worth celebrating.

In regards to your choice in VEIST weaponry, while I applaud your superior taste in aesthetics and your logic in choosing them ("they stand out as something new" you said), I disagree that Drifter would choose them for that reason. Instead, I would think that any new weapons that show up in Beacon would instantly put the authorities on edge/high alert. Considering Ozpin is in good with Ironwood, he would easily be able to confirm if the weapons were Atlas made, and if they weren't, the remaining options would be limited and unlikely, leaving only the big, "obviously-the-new-guy" answer. Instead, I would think Drifter would want his goods to appear as generic as possible to avoid suspicion, which would suggest he would be moving HAKKE weapons which favor function over form.

Don't underestimate a Guardian's mobility in-lore. Sure in game everything is kind of balanced around gameplay, but a more accurate image of Guardians comes from the lore, where they do way more crazy stuff than what we see in-game or in cut-scenes. For instance, Efrideet, a Hunter, throwing Saladin down a mountain... "He stops speaking as Efrideet grabs him by the metallic collar, pressing him over her head. Arc energy from both Lightbearers coalesces in a roaring storm around them—Saladin's crackling, barely contained, Efrideet's flowing, guiding. The mountain rumbles beneath her as she steps forward. Waves of gravel and dirt blast up behind her as she hurls the armored man off the cliffside like a javelin, their combined Arc energy singing like a drawn sword. Saladin's gilded form becomes a cannon shot, tearing holes through three layers of clouds as he rips down toward the Fallen Walker."

...or in some of the more recent lore where Shaxx, as a Warlord, casually back-hands Felwinter's head right off his shoulders, multiple times. Now imagine a Hunter Running Spectral Blades. I imagine they could probably move as fast as Ruby can with her Semblance, like a streaking shadow of Void Light.

Also as far as the Nine go, as I saw you mentioned them, the Nine are conscious dark matter, literally gaiaforms (read: Antaeus Wards) formed from the living consciousness of all of Humanity. Remnant should have such a form as well, though that can probably be worked in with the lore of the gods somehow. Perhaps an unseen force the brother gods... or anyone for that matter... didn't know about, but Drifter does. After all, I presume the Derelict is still hauling the Nine's gift behind it. And speaking of...

Don't forget that in the lore book "Stolen Intelligence" from Season of the Drifter, "#1315 has harnessed his "banks" to what appears to be an engine of pure potential. He no longer needs to pilfer the Ascendant Plane of Primevals, the oldest Taken in residence. He can create Primeval-likes from the energy of "the haul" and sheer force of will. As to the apparent presence of #2015, it is a falsehood. My handlers in the Praxic Order surmise simply: the shape of Oryx was the scariest Hive he could think of. He's tenacious, but he has a small mind."

So he can also create what appear to be Echoes of Oryx, though they aren't actually real Echoes, just Primevals in the shape of an Echo of Oryx. But he can also create anything else too.

And one last thing, which is more of gripe than a criticism, I know that the Drifter put us (the Guardian) on to a quest for Thorn, though we ultimately ended up finding the Last Word, the ACTUAL Last Word, not a replica, but it would actually make more sense if the Drifter used Malfeasance instead of Thorn as his weapon of choice. The Thorns we use normally are replicas, but can't actually kill Guardians like the original Thorn could (which we take, purify, and turn into Lumina). So it makes less sense that he use a Thorn replica than his own Malfeasance, and even then, considering the gun is basically shooting Taken bullets (no joke, the bullet's particle effect is Taken) he would save that for special occasions and instead rely on Trust, which is his normal hand cannon that we see tucked into his waist coat, and the Distant Relation scout rifle slung over his shoulder.

Regardless, I look forward to your next chapter eagerly! And feel free to hit me up for Destiny trivia! I'm working on my own Destiny crossovers so I've become a bit of a loremaster since I started.

Eagerly yours...

O author mine.

Nice work, keep it up.
Dregen Guest chapter 9 . 2/7
Ooooh. That last section, stolen Destiny weapons at play. You say Drifter may not go after them but if he finds out they were used on possible future crew members. Drifter is probably gonna do something (maybe not fight but something) to try and keep his future investment around.
Guest chapter 9 . 2/4
Will drifter be a good guy if so things would be a lot more awesome, I thought of a giant taken ogre against that big major behemoth elephant and later act like a puppy after defeating it like ruby rubbing his taken tummy
Zero sum13 chapter 9 . 2/6
So malfeasance is maybe confirmed? Does that mean other exotics and overall items of interest from the sol system will eventually make it in? Either way good stuff and can’t wait for more.
