I enjoyed this story and appreciate how you bring historical facts into this story. Interesting how Littlejohn seems to be the most observant of the squad when it comes to Kirby, or maybe he's the only one that Billy can ask such personal questions to. Your characterizations of the squad members is so good.

Lots of great interaction between the squad and Kirby. A good story about how we continued to fight the war even beyond Christmas. I liked your mention of Saunders' 'thorn' in his side, though I like Kirby overall.

This sure sounds like the beginning of a series of stories. I like how you went deeper into the hearts and souls of the guys. Kirby appearing to be mad because his sewing kit was borrowed without asking, when actually he was afraid he'd lost something special from home. Yep, can't let anyone know you might be a tad homesick. And then him acting mad at Billy, when he was actually scared to death that he almost killed him. And Little John knowing Kirby well enough to be able to explain to Billy what was rea)y behind Kirbys actions. Hope you have follow ups to this; you certainly left the door open for them.
