This is exactly what I wish had happened. Even if you didn’t (in your head or with a later sequel) go the “he'll come around when he sees what my magic does for him” route, I still would prefer Merlin to have told him early and just left when (WHEN) Arthur was an ass. This opens up to a heck of a lot more substance the OG I reckon.

So sad.

I need to see how Arthur is going to react to Merlin gone and to see where Merlin goes next

Excellent. I am so glad you gave Merlin the courage to realise (finally) that he was fighting a losing battle.
In my own mind I see Merlin leaving to join the Druids. Here he could finally learn about his magic and protect his people properly.
