Its a shame how underexposed this is, cause it surprised me with how good it was.
When I see short chapters and a first person perspective, those tend to be bad signs, but my worries were completely unfounded. Veronicas inner monologue was smooth and easy to read, and has a sort of dry wit that reminds me vaguely of a detective noir narration. I guess brevity really is the soul of wit. I doubt that the noir thing was intentional, because its pretty out of place in the setting, but it made veronica very charming to me.
I cant say that i know a lot about surfing, but it feels like you do at least. Reading veronica gush about surfing usually left me lost, but I understood what was going on in key scenes, like the competition. Its clear that veronica is very passionate about it, and that’s fun to read.
I like betty well enough, but she’s basically just martha with a few traits swapped out, and im not sure why she was replaced in the first place. Though given how martha is still around, i imagine ill find out soon enough.
Im also not sure why this story is tagged as fantasy. There i haven't noticed anything fantastical going on yet so i assume there'll be a big twist coming. My bet is that Heather C is actually a demon lol.
Speaking of her, i’m also really impressed with how you handled her. She actually has the charisma you’d expect from someone in her position, but is still just as ruthless and shes very fun to read about. The flashback scene of her “losing” homecoming queen was absolutely great and made her a favorite almost instantly.
This fic isnt perfect, but it stands head and shoulders above the majority on this website. It deserves more attention and I eagerly await the next update.
