hello.happy.panda chapter 1 . 4/28/2019
This is fantastic! Perfectly showed the effects Garrett's training has on Ward, the loss of confidence, loathing himself but hating the sicko that kept him out there. Knowing he's probably better off dead. John, laughing and leaving, returning just after the kid has really accepted his fate. Seriously well done, great sample of the obvious method of gaslighting John used from day one. Grant never stops feeling indebted to Garrett, not seeing that he doesn't owe him shit, if he did it's been paid years ago, and that he's a disposable tool for John's ego/protection/quest for power. Grant isn't emotionally stunted, he's been carefully groomed the way an abusive guardian or spouse would train their victim to fear, depend, tolerate escalation of verbal/physical abuse, and still care for & feel gratitude in small rare acts of affection.

"Everything is pain. I'm not worth the oxygen. So I'll accept this, be stronger...not whine for
better. Maybe make them proud by completing every task, even before they ask. If I do something wrong, I am stupid or weak."

They wait until you think you know how the rules, until you're comfortable, almost accomplished...and trip you up. It gets easier for them every time, and you stop noticing that it's their boot knocking you off balance. You're a burden they must constantly protect from itself.
