Kodachi Claws chapter 7 . 2/27 Now Aladdin is part of the Illuminati...why do I feel like this is the Disney Aladdin I grew up with? Genie’s antics aside, the magic of Agrabah could fit very well in the Gargoyles’ universe. I really don’t like the idea of including Templars in this universe. They practically ARE the Illuminati in the AC universe, and this feels like an unnecessary complication. And did we REALLY have to include FMA into this? I would very much like to avoid crossing over with other series, as this is supposed to be a fan-envisioned expansion of Gargoyles Weisman intended but never got a chance to do. I’m curious about the Persian Gargoyle; I wonder if that will come into play? I really enjoyed the meeting between Merlin and Nimue, and I think the former’s feelings on the matter are the best thing to make of it. Too often shonen anime will have a character outright forgive others despite truly heinous acts (I’m looking at you, Naruto). Here, while Merlin still does have feelings for Nimue, he’s still justifiably mad over what happened. I like the idea of a character not ready to forgive someone but does try. And now, you’ve got me curious about this upcoming cataclysm. GregX was vague about what it was, and he confirmed it wasn’t Thailog. I’m going to guess it is the Space Spawn...after all, the Illuminati wanted Arthur and Merlin out of the picture for at least another 200 years. So time wise it makes sense. The best part of this story was expanding the Illuminati, using several historical and mythical figures. So kudos on that. Can’t wait to see who else exists in this society. |
Kodachi Claws chapter 6 . 2/26 Well, Hassan is just crazy OP. Even factoring experience of centuries, no way he could catch a bullet. I liked Merlin’s solution here though. Any physical victory the squad could have gotten over Hassan would have just been an asspull, so this was definitely the way to go story wise. It would be handy if this spell was permanent, but I’ve a feeling it won’t. No way it ends just like this. |
Kodachi Claws chapter 5 . 2/24 Well, I feel like an idiot. I thought the subtle nods to kunoichi was a coincidence, and this chapter proved you knew EXACTLY what you were doing in regards to history. The fight scene was very enjoyable and well choreographed. I especially liked all the subtle details you put in where Chiyome employed various weapons and traps to defeat her opponents, instead of just charging in with a telegraphed attack and shouting. That trope hasn’t aged well in Hollywood. |
Kodachi Claws chapter 4 . 2/23 Ah, so Adam IS Frankenstein’s monster. I remember him being mentioned, but I never gave it much thought. I guess that’s because the monster is usually portrayed as having greenish skin, abnormally large forehead and bolts in his neck. I may have missed those details in the description, but in my head he was nothing like the classic Frankenstein, and I think that’s for the better. It seems Griff knew the Merlin he was speaking to was a fraud. I’m guessing he was just saying those things earlier to confirm his suspicions and went along with the game to throw Fantom off. And how crazy is this death trap? At this point it looks like everyone will literally have to nuke the place just to get out. I’m enjoying the bits with the miko, being an anime fan and all. I’m liking how you’re following through on what Fleur said about the Illuminati having spies disguised as low class workers. Ironically, this is a very similar thing kunoichi (female ninja) did to build up intelligence, and in that sense using a Japanese Priestess to set up a network in this story is a perfect homage to that. |
Kodachi Claws chapter 3 . 2/21 I’ve two guesses who this giant assassin is: He’s either Adam from the Garden, or Prometheus. I’m guessing based purely on the dialogue he told Griff, so I could be and am likely very wrong on that count. I really enjoyed the conversation between Griff and Merlin. In all honesty, I kind of felt their hostility towards one another in previous stories was rather forced, but it did give some insight on why they didn’t get along, and I’m glad it seems they’ve settled their differences. The maze we’re finding them in is rather out there, even by Gargoyles standards. If this thing is underground, I cannot imagine the logistical nightmare to build it. Owen, back at Castle Wyvern: The cost of moving this castle will be...astronomical. Fantômas: Hold my wine |
Kodachi Claws chapter 2 . 2/19 This has gotten interesting, though I’m curious how Fantom can quickly create such elaborate traps. I’m guessing in the case of the boss’s apartment, it was already under Illuminati watch and therefore were able to booby-trap it before hand. I’m not fluent in French, but I think the conversations helped with putting things into context and giving me the general gist of what was happening. The set up has definitely become very exciting, with Griff liable to turn to stone in any minute, and I’m looking forward to the rest. |
Kodachi Claws chapter 1 . 2/18 So...this is now an Assassin’s Creed crossover? Kidding, but I personally would have phrased the famous creed differently. It seems we’re getting a bigger picture of the Illuminati now, but there are so many members that I’m losing track. Even so, it’s fun for the reader to see this part of Gargoyles lore expand. |
Todd chapter 8 . 6/20/2019 Peter Capaldi as Merlin? Certainly makes sense, in light of how often Merlin's been compared to the Doctor. (And - whoa - Tom Baker as Mycroft?) |
Todd chapter 7 . 6/20/2019 A very Illuminati-ish revelation of one of the goals behind Griff's attempted assassination. Thank you for this story. |
Todd chapter 6 . 6/20/2019 A very impressive fight scene - and with an ingenious conclusion. The detail that most stood out to me was your identifying a Persian gargoyle clan with the legendary simurgh. I hadn't considered that possibility, but it makes such good sense now. |
Todd chapter 5 . 6/17/2019 Another good chapter. I was particularly amused by the reference to the "Sword in the Stone" movie. |
Todd chapter 4 . 6/16/2019 Just finished reading this chapter. I'm not familiar enough with Japanese history and legend to recognize Chiyome Mochizuki, though I assume that she comes from it and isn't your invention. (I did know the story about Susanoo slaying the eight-headed serpent, though.) I hadn't expected her to cross paths with Vinnie, even with him living in Japan now, but was amused by that scene. |
Todd chapter 3 . 6/15/2019 Another exciting chapter. Evidently the "No member is permitted to take the least notice of any other one" rule of the Diogenes Club doesn't apply to the Game Room. I guessed almost at once who Adam was, but the revelation of George's identity was a complete surprise to me. (I think it's fitting that he and the Frankenstein monster would get to meet, though - Lord Byron was one of the fellow-guests at that villa when Mary Shelley came up with her story.) |
Todd chapter 2 . 6/14/2019 So Joan of Arc's another member of the Illuminati (and must have managed to fake being burnt at the stake). Two immortals maligned by Shakespeare alive in the present day - and both in the same chapter. And a great cliffhanger; I look forward to finding out not only how Griff gets out of this one, but who the giant would-be executioner is... |
Todd chapter 1 . 6/13/2019 Just finished reading this chapter. I should probably read the stories this one's a sequel to (I haven't read all the stories in this series), to fill in the blanks, but in the meantime, I enjoyed this one - including such elements as the Old Man of the Mountain. Got a smile, also, about Quincy Hemings' mention of something in Florida he wanted to look into - less than two months from the 2000 presidential election - and the Illuminati actually denying they had anything to do with the Kennedy assassination (though, as they also said, they were certainly quick to take advantage of it). |
