Good opening with the chainsaw massacre. I found it eased you well into Sonic's perspective there, into that stubborn positive look on things that in SatAM more than other universes has to be as much coping mechanism as personality. In Sonic's retelling of the events, it seems even a bit funny at first, and his mannerism as well as Sally's reaction to it seem familiar enough to almost count as business as usual.

It takes a little longer to figure it isn't, while Sonic catches up on Sally's mood. I like that in writing, when the story moves at the characters' pace and capacity, this "world through their eyes" feeling.

Good point on the time frame, how long it'll take for the trees to grow back, and how quickly they were destroyed by Robotnik. It drives home the difference in position they have in this war, and is a good metaphor for the high stakes in general.

As expected there's a strong grasp on the characters throughout, the relationship and dialogue feel natural and fit into SatAM's more serious situation, also in that Sonic is supportive by being there, rather than offers happy-go-lucky platitudes.

I need to do a better job keeping track of your Sonic fics.

Really like your Sonic fanfics. You really seem to have a great grasp of the characters. I almost hear Sonic's voice from the old cartoons when the hedgehog talks in this.

Wow, your language use is impressive carpe diem. Now that's a word I have to look up and what a touching interaction between Sonic and Sally as well since the rebuilding bit I think is something not covered often enough by the comics.
