I think the second option. I don’t think he could really even pretend to kill Padmé, fake or not, again. Unfulfilled and angry is pretty much how he remains until he saves Luke and turns back to the light side of the force.

I could see it either way. Though the first is daring and honestly a bit unexpected but sad.
