Reviews for Scout (SYOC)
Lazersword88 chapter 11 . 3/20
That opening section with Janet was everything I wanted and then some! I loved how you took some of the outlines I left in my app and expounded on them in that scene. I think you nicely capture what I was going for with the character and just thus chapter alone made it worth submitting her.

I'm happy to see thus story back and I hope everyone continues supporting it. I'm enjoying the subtle tension of this situation thats building.

I'm getting a real Tyler Durdan vibe from Nui. Even though she seems like the 'straight woman' in this crowd of misfits and crazies, I get the sense that she might be more unstable then we think. Her unreliability also calls into question some of what we've already seen, which I think needs to be handled with care.

Glad this story is back and can't wait to see more!
astaroth516 chapter 11 . 3/16
Oh Boi this is an interesting chapter!

First of all we have Janets POV. Kudos for her for manipulating Marcos the way she did. althought this doesnt speak well of Marcos, because if he can be manipulated like that he can be left in a very problematic position if things turn sour.

Nui does have some serious PTSD going on. This, unfortunately, is going to make her appear more unreliable in the eyes of the rest. Also, that falling out with Akiko is going to hurt her position, mainly because now she has alienated on of her "allies". Finally, now she has a weapon, and that joined with the allucinations she makes very possible that she ends up stabbing someone by accident.

All in all, great chapter, keep up the good work.
heartattak chapter 11 . 3/15
Wow, to see this story bless my email inbox once again, I am absolutely shaking in my slippers from all of this, good lord! The writing is as strong as it's always been, Renny! This was such a fucking intense chapter! It felt suffocating and methodical - only in the best way imaginable! A feeling that I've grown accustomed to whenever I read this piece of work, it's so exciting! I love all of your stories with a burning passion, and they've inspired me to better myself and my ability. However, this still remains to be my favorite SYOC by you, period. I could still remember the day where this was updated and my eyes were blessed! We've grown so much since then, huh? Le sigh~

Anyways, I'll stop now before I go on a gushy tangent. Shall we proceed? The opening portion of the chapter, which was a rather interesting look into what I'm guessing to be a bit of Janet's past before she was sent to camp? Brilliant! Such a juicy appetizer that left me utterly satisfied, yet even more curious about our red-head. Speaking of this red-head, it doesn't take a genius to see that from an outsider's perspective, Janet is obviously manipulating our poor, racist child. I guess when you put it that way, it kinda makes you feel a little less sympathetic for Marcos, doesn't it? Hehe~ I digress! Anyways, it appears that our boy is quite naive as well. Either that, or Janet is just THAT good at what she does? It's probably a little bit of both, honestly.

Still, I have to applaud Janet here on her choice of words in order to get a bit closer to him - It would seem that she's playing him like a fiddle for now, and his guard is lowered drastically. I can't see this going well for him, but we'll see! Janet, you naughty little girl, hehe! It's hard to believe that this girl is merely fifteen years old sometimes.

Now, let's leave that messy situation for another time and move to an even messier one. Nui's struggle with her PTSD(?) is on full display here. Horibe, though she might be gone, still haunts this poor girl, and it's heartbreaking. It seems her weight was one of the factors that led to her being a victim of bullying as well? Oh, Nui... you poor thing. I hate that Hajime sent her out. Obviously, no one is to blame here, triggers can happen at any time, hence why they're named as such. Still, it physically hurt to see Akiko get upset with Nui in that instance. I couldn't even fathom what kind of feeling overtook Nui once she realized what happened. I hope things are patched up between them...

And that section with Shinya and Nui being alone together. Hooh boy, that was quite something. I want to say that this is more so Nui's state of mind getting to her, but I'm suspecting Shinya heavily here, no joke. I cannot trust any fucking body at this camp anymore, nothing is as it seems with these little shits!

the good thing though? Baby girl has a weapon now! She should... she needs one, considering that she's easily one of the weaker campers. Use it wisely, Nui and remember! Horibe can't hurt you anymore. She isn't real.

Though, I have a feeling that she will struggle with remembering that after this chapter. *smirks evilly* Good~ I like that~

It's good to see you back at it with this story, Renny! Take care, love ya, you talented king~!

When I finished reading, I knew that I had to review this chapter, right here, right now.

Holy. Fucking. Shit. Just...holy SHIT. AAaaaAAAAAaaaaaaaaaAAAAA-

I literally jumped up and went "YOOOO" seeing this update, the excitement I felt was intense as hell man. But God, this chapter here reminded me EXACTLY why I fucking love this piece of work. I know I've said this before, but I'll say it again. You've managed to make me invested in every. single. character in here. Literally everyone and THAT is an amazing accomplishment, my friend. I lowkey wish I can fix Pierre and make him as great as the rest of the cast here LMAO. I absolutely LOVE what you're doing with the whole mental/psychological scenes that pop up and I just. Agh. I just love it. They way you write them is hella realistic and it adds such a great edge. Its a different kind of thrill next to the zombies.

MY GOD JANET WHAT ARE YOU DOING HER WHOLE SECTION MADE ME sCrEaM AAAAAAAAAA. She's one of the most cunning OC's we've seen yet and definitely not someone to be trusted (I'm not gonna forget Shinya though and a few others, can't trust any of these people smh). The way she easily manipulated with Marcos emotions like that was wild as hell. 'Us foreign kids have to look out for each other.' That line made me yeLL. If that whole story about the sex trafficking ring is true and if I'm not just overthinking things about connections, I'm really looking forward to how everything is gonna go down in the future. I'm just looking forward to whatever in general!

Nui legit just needs a hug right now. And some well needed therapy. (everyone tbh)
This chapter really shows how horrible the mental anguish she's going through is, really shines through. Add on to the fact that the world is literally ending, this doesn't spell anything but trouble for her. I think everyone honestly just needs a big hug or to be told that its gonna be okay or something :,) She's just gonna end up stabbing someone when she's having another hallucination, isn't she? I'm calling it right here and now. Ahhhh. Jeez, you got me real hyped for this story and I'm definitely looking forward to your next update. Until then!
ekoshio chapter 11 . 3/13
aaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

why do you do this?

why?

don't you know your actions have consEQUENCES?!

*coughs* aHEM. onto the review of the chapter instead of my freakout. there wasn't much that happened, but it's certainly enough to plant the seeds of future endeavors and problems for some characters. speaking of them...

marcos, bby, no. don't trust the betelgeuse. she planning DEATH(TM). and it seems like she's quite familiar with the concept, given the flashback, so all i can hope for is that you open your third eye somehow and don't meet an untimely demise. ;w;

can't even really comment much on the whole nui situation. she's very clearly traumatized over the death of horibe, and it seems like a lot of things can trigger her, which means... well... bad things for our poor lil' murderer. such as her unintentionally lashing out on akiko. no doubt that'll keep happening.

plus... the shinya portion... oh bOY. nope. won't even give that anything beyond an acknowledgment that nui's mental state is pretty bad but it's hard to tell if shinya was actually saying those words. or perhaps nui's darker side is coming out, out of fear of the other campers - rightfully so. but shinya's a weird one, so...

get your hw done, bottom.
Lazersword88 chapter 10 . 6/16/2019
Well this is certainly a surprise! I thought this story was dead when the updates stopped coming, but I'm glad the story is back. I'm hoping next chapter is a bit longer, since the brevity of this one meant that only a few characters got any spotlight (not just saying that because Janet only got one passing mention... actually that's exactly why I'm saying it). I'm not sure what to think of how the inmate's files were introduced and used in the last two chapters. Since we've introduced that fact that they exist, but the characters never read them, it creates a Chekov's gun that they need to be an important plot point in the future to justify their inclusion. It makes me curious about who will skim the files and to what ends, so that's interesting. There a multitude of directions the story could take from here, so I'm really curious to see where this all goes. This chapter was flawless from a technical and grammatical standpoint, so kudos! The more chapters I read, the more I've come to appreciate Nui as a good fish out of water protagonist for this kind of story, though I do hope we start to see her character grow in meaningful ways in future chapters as she comes to terms with the situation and the comrades she is surrounded with. Hope we don't have to wait as long before the next update!
astaroth516 chapter 10 . 6/8/2019
I am happy that you updated but sad because it is so short. It's confusing.
This was a really interesting chapter, with shit hitting the fan even faster that I thougth. Pros for Karenachi for standing up to Tadase, that was really brave of him, and to Eichi for being such a cool bro. Tadase is being a really cold boi, with all the rude remarks and attempted eye stabbing. Now I want to see a fight between Tadase the eye stabber and Spoon Jun.
Also, poor Nui, she's having a really bad time. We need to send her all our love and support, #HugsforNui.
I find really interesting that they are starting to wondering about how are their families doing. Even if I think that some of them won't give a damn.
Can't wait to see what will they do now.
P.D: Happy birthday nerfherder,I hope life is treating you well
heartattak chapter 10 . 6/7/2019
Ok, I’m gonna take a few moments to compose myself before I give my thoughts on this chapter. It’s needed, I assure you. If I speak, I’ll scream. If I type, I’ll lock the caps, so this is the responsible thing for me to do. I’m an adult, and I must act accordingly. With all that being said, give me a quick second.

...

...

...

...

...it didn’t help.

AHHHHHHHHHH, THIS WAS AMAZING IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY! AM I BEING BIASED? PROBABLY, I DON’T KNOW, BUT I DON’T GIVE A FUCK EITHER! MY BOOOOY HAS SHOWED HIS TRUE COLORS! HE PROTECTS HIS PEEPS!

Ok, I’ll stop.

I loved every single bit of what you did between Karenachi and Tadase. I knew it in my heart, something told me that these two were going to have problems with each other eventually! Lo and behold, I was right! For once, I was actually right! Boy, I’m really glad I am too. Seeing him finally snap was so... invigorating! I know, he’s my character and all, I’m totally gushing about it now, but I simply can’t help it! The moment Tadase said something about dead weight, and Karenachi heard him, I was immediately suspicious! I can’t wait to see if these two will continue to have problems later on!

...

I did it.

I got it all out.

Anyways~ Minori has a good point. There’s a chance that all of those on the outside of the camp are infected as well. Gosh, that’ll be a tricky situation for our guys and gals..

Nui.. this girl is having such s terrible time, it’s not even funny. Write me in so I can embrace this innocent child.

This was quality, as it always is when you’re writing it. I eagerly await the next installment, but please have as much fun on your upcoming birthday as you can! Bye~
astaroth516 chapter 9 . 4/13/2019
Nothing like you updating a chapter to cheer me up in a shitty week.
This may be a short, filler chapter, but I think that it gives us a little insight about how group dynamics are going to be, and that's always good.
In the character department, Yuna still gives me the creeps, I mean, she is too calm in this situation. I also can't wait for them to read Aria's file because that whole blood motive is really weird. I'm also glad that Karenachi has a POV this chapter, the poor guy is going through a lot right now. He is really perceptive and I appreciate that he voluntereed to have his file read first. Tadase is one cold boi and the way he was looking to Aria and Jane make me think that he is still planning to bail out of there with them, which is a bad idea right now, but whatever. By the way, now I can't stop thinking about what did he had in that suitcase. A weapon? A took for his escape? Some twinkies?

Love that in the next chapter they're going to read the files, because that is going to set group dynamics in place, and is going to be tough for the guides to maintain the group cohesion. Althougth they're probably just going to say why they are there and what skills do they have.

Can't wait for the next chapter. Awesome writing like always.
Lazersword88 chapter 9 . 4/12/2019
The great SYOC content drought is finally over! While this chapter did not move the story along quite as much as last chapter, it did set up some of the important plot dynamics and character relationships that I hope are explored further in future chapters. I'm not quite sure how I feel about the character's files being recited. While it does make sense from a plot perspective, it may undermine some of the mystery surrounding each of the inmates and what they might be capable of in the future. I'm hoping that a few surprises are withheld until later in the story. The chapter was perfect in terms of pacing and grammar, with enough intrigue to tide us over until a more substantial update. I'm continually impressed by how you keep all characters relevant from chapter to chapter, but I am waiting on the characterization of few characters to start evolving from where they started (particularly noticable in the drug abuse duo). This story is continuously great, but I have a feeling Nerf hasn't even hit his full stride yet. I eagerly await the next update.
heartattak chapter 9 . 4/12/2019
You know, I'm sure this is going to sound strange, but whenever I read an update for this story, I get really queasy. I'm not sure if it's out of excitement or anxiety. It's a mixture of both, I suppose. I like to be fully immersed while partaking in a story like this. Therefore, I imagine myself in the same position as the campers. When I do so, I can practically FEEL how heavy the atmosphere of the environment is. Like, there is an overwhelming feeling of dread accompanied by an unhealthy amount of tension. Does this make sense? I hope it does. I'm not the best when comes to articulating my thoughts... but, yeah. To put it simply, I'm shook, fam. I've said it before, but you're really good at setting the tone for a story like this. This was a solid breather from all of the craziness last chapter. I also love how slow the pacing of it is too. It feels like it's matching up with the exhaustion felt by some of the characters.

As for Yuna and Aria, these two are so mysterious for different reasons. It’s startling to see how... composed Yuna is in comparison to the others. She's like a friendly badass! I'm really curious to know her backstory. Aria is an enigma for obvious reasons. Her fixation with blood, the fact that she's from Kabukicho, and her appearance. Gah, everything about her is strange! It makes her so fucking interesting!

Karenachi, you poor thing...

It's very interesting to see things from his POV. He's definitely perceptive as fuck... he kinda has to be. Seeing how Karenachi observes Janet, Tadase and Aria throughout their whole exchange makes me believe that he’ll be involved in some way later on. Still, I'm glad he stepped up to the plate! I can't imagine how hard it must be for him to air out his own personal baggage. Way to go, kiddo. ALSO, YOU ARE WRITING HIM BEAUTIFULLY! Looking back over his character sheet, I definitely felt like I could've done a better job at fleshing him out before sending him, but wow! You're doing great.

For a filler chapter, I was pretty entertained! I eagerly await for what's in store! Take care, Ren!
ExusiaiApplePie chapter 8 . 3/13/2019
This shall be a joint review for the last couple of chapters. Ohoooo do I sense a ship brewing between Yuna and Nui? Hehehehe Big Sis approves, Omega Good Job, Yuna Chan hehehe And also, shit really hit the fan here, and holy crap, dem zom zoms be STRONK, getting pinned by one of them would NOT be fun! Also, I do agree with what has been said before about the adult characters because they really did seem to just appear out of nowhere. Other than that though, I really did love the last two chapters, and not just because my girl got to shine ! Looking forward to the next update soon :)
taco wrestler chapter 8 . 3/6/2019
I missed three chapters, holy shit-
But I really have no excuse for not logging on, I've just been lazy :,)

I swear to God, the whole cast is just so endearing to me in their own little way. I'm honestly really interested in everyone and what they've done in the past and I really enjoy reading all of their moments. You have a knack for making all the characters likable and showing characterization and agh, I just love it.
I agree with my fellow reviewers, the buildup really made you anticipate the zombies but damn, shit just flew straight into the fan this chapter and I goddAMn love it. I can definitely tell that you enjoyed writing this too and I tip my hat! The way you wrote all the horror/more serious scenes really brought me into the moment but my damn cackles throughout reading this, oh my god-

That scene with Shinya hanging on to Janet's hair for dear life really got me rolling. yOU CAN'T BLAME HIM, HE WAS JUST FOLLOWING HIS INSTINCTS, I'D DO THE SAME IF I WAS ABOUT TO BE EATEN-
And of course Haku flies out the window while tryna fight, you can't forget about spreading that chuunibyo around. Her effort is still a valiant one.
Speaking of flying, Pierre ordering Avi to yEET THAT BITCH WAS GREAT, IT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING HE'D SAY AHAH. That actually caught me off guard and I laughed. I really love what you're doing with him btw, you're doing a wonderful job writing him and I truly appreciate it! Thanks :,)
But I must agree, whY ISN'T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT YUNA AND HOW BADASS SHE WAS THIS CHAPTER-
She went from a helpfully sweet, puppy-crush loving girl into a calm and collected badass. I also see that her and Pierre have something in common though, which is actually pretty interesting to see. I wonder if they're both aware of it and I think I have an inkling as to her background.
Speaking of which! Poor Hajime! I'm guessing she had a little sister and something bad happened to her so she did something about it and got into trouble with someone rich. A case of harassment maybe? Or rape even? Hhhhh

Also, RIP Mistui and Sukawa and their brief 2 chapter appearances. I'm really excited for the next chapter and how everything is gonna unfold! I'll be seeing you next time ;)
