Loved this bit: Paris levelled a look his way. "I used to pee in her family's pool when I was five and she was a cadet. I'm pretty sure she doesn't see me as confidant material."

Also loved the "always" at the end.

This was lovely, as always. Very good portrayal of what their first season relationship might have looked like... and Tom! Love the head canon that the Paris and Janeway families have a strong personal history. Thanks for coming back to play for a little bit!

Oh. My. Gosh.

I've watched the entire Voyager series 3.5 times through (I'm on my 4th watch through now) and some favorite episodes a lot more often. I've parsed and analyzed the show. I've been reading Voyager fanfics like crazy lately, especially J/C ones. I've written or am writing a good many of them myself.

And it's never once even occurred to me that she and her fiance probably had a wedding date set that would pass while she was in the Delta Quadrant! Oi! I feel like an idiot!

This is absolutely beautifully done. I was surprised to see that Chakotay and Seska were, in this version, still together 6 months in, and started immediately calculating things in my mind trying to think if it's plausible. I don't think there's anything in the series to expressly say they're not, it just surprised me.

Again, lovely!

I love understated stories, and this one was lovely. I was interested to see here that Chakotay was still involved with Seska at this point (in your opinion!). Mostly I like how he is not quite in tune with the Captain yet, still learning to pick up on the subtle signs of distress. Very nice, and very sad for her.

Tom Paris strikes again as man of the hour - at once scoundrel and saint. Nicely done.
