Having reviewed the other story I read today, I thought it only fair to do this one too. That said, I didn't like this one that much.
There was much to like, and it was very well written and the character's voices were well captured.
Now, while I know the majority of this fandom disagree (take that as "would like to burn me at the stake for my 'Heresy'"), I don't much enjoy the near constant fanfic slamming of Andy, while Sharon is elevated to near-god status.
I have seen ALL of Closer and Major Crimes. I contend that an unbiased, non-fan view (both of which I was, for both characters at first viewing) of Sharon's first 2 eps show her as an incompetent b*tch.
While many/most who read this are preparing their torches, let me review.
Her first ep, she threw her weight all over the place trying hard to bully our then-heroine, Chief Johnson.
It seemed very much as though she was only brought on to be so "witchy" that she would soften BLJ's rather, to me, obnoxious personality. (NOT a fan of BLJ either)
Sharon's team missed a VERY obvious point of bullet casings being ejected forcefully for some distance, and rather, seemed to find, from what one would think was SOME experience, that they fell directly to the ground at the shooter's feet. Highly competent, experienced team? REALLY?
Before anyone comments on the idea that maybe Sharon was busy elsewhere and assigned some absolute newbie...come on! This was the "MAJOR CRIMES" (or PMS/PHD/whatever they going by at that time) team. Not only very high profile cops, but also "pet" of Pope. Sharon should've given it HER personal best and her best people. Even her own eyes, with no actual experience beyond the Academy firing range, should've caught this.
This is one of the MANY really stupid plot devices I've always had issue with.
BUT IT'S CANON
In her 2nd ep, she was emotionally overwhelmed at the idea of a woman getting a few bruises from her supposedly-crappy husband. I am not insensitive to spousal abuse. I just think Sharon's overly dramatic/choked up reading of her PREPARED statement belies her much-touted supposedly cold-as-ice work demeanor. (Not arguing acting ability, but rather director/whoever decision to do it that way.)
My point is that, after how many years on the force, how many rapes, murders, child victims, etc., how does a few bruises cause this huge reaction. (I know IA/FID doesn't get as grisly, but you'd think there would be enough for her to develop, if not coolness, at least a good facade.) It did not appear the two, Sharon and victim/killer, were actually all that close. And, if they were, how poor a judge of character does that make her?
Again, well written, but, if everyone wants a ride on the way-back machine, and we're going to always make Andy an a$$, how about giving equal measure to Sharon's canon past.
I also think Sharon is a huge sexist. It was woman, so the man had to be guilty. Another reference, 1x5, where her reaction to the murdered boy was, "His poor mother." Not for the victim, family, parents, just mom. Dad did come off rather rough LATER, but this was before we met him. Also, again with her vast people-reading skills and experience, she doesn't recognize that men handle things differently...
That's Sharon's actual, canon history.
As for Andy, in his 1st ep, I was completely on his side. In the very first scene, BLJ was insulting, disrespectful, and obnoxious. While Andy's subsequent behavior, in the 1st season especially, was poor, she definitely set the tone for the relationship. I think there were bad writing/directing choices there too, but BLJ still/always irked me.
As a woman, of, I hope, some strength/strength of character, I deplore the entertainment industry's portrayal (betrayal?) of all woman as either wussy or witchy. Very seldom do we see any woman of gentle strength. Sharon, later, perhaps, but not initially, and BLJ never.
Can no one write a story of the past where Andy wasn't a jerk and Sharon the SUPERhero?
Another point, often in fanfic, and REALLY bugs me: the flawless, amazing, knows all, sees all, best at everything Sharon/most main characters.
I have not re-watched MC as much as CL - too me just not as good a show, and I dislike Rusty (and the whole teenage angst/family hour) much more than I dislike BLJ, also thought the plots were better.
That said, in pure canon (even implied) can anyone tell me where we found out Sharon was such a phenomenal marksman? MarksWOman?
My recollection of her shooting skills being demonstrated are: 1) the stupid bean bag thing (I'll come back to it), 2) shooting at the fleeing Wade Weller (?), and 3) the courthouse where Taylor died.
In reverse order, the courtroom: while calm under extreme stress is laudable, it was very short range, the only real technical skill would being not hitting bystanders.
2nd WW: she shot through a closed door a couple of feet in front of her, then did not get a single shot off at a moving target. Doesn't say a thing about skill. Good judgement, fine, courage, great, but skill? (BTW, is it police procedure to shoot into an unknown room? Under the circumstances, possibly, but there could have been innocents in that room.)
And now, the stupid, f-ing Bean bag: first, does proficiency with a rarely used (by FID/IA captains) really indicate talent with the standard service weapon? She herself said it was a lucky shot (ridiculous scene - none of the cops could've just chased the WALKING guy?). But my biggest pick is this: she got him in the head, not quite "right between the eyes" as Tao said, but pretty close. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the primary purpose to stop the guy? And isn't standard training to aim for the main mass of the target (under normal circumstances) as that makes the largest probability of actually hitting it? A head shot is usually reserved for marksmen/snipers intending death or if it's the only shot available, right? Additionally, aren't bean bag guns meant to be, not just non-lethal, but as harmless as possible? Pretty sure a shot to the gut would've brought the guy down, at least long enough for all those other cops to wrestle into cuffs. Whereas the head shot could've easily missed, lobbed the bag into all those innocents they were so concerned about, possibly took a child's eye out. Or, for that matter, the creep's eye. It was only needed to stop him, actual injury would've delayed things and even caused a lawsuit - on of Sharon's focuses.
Seems to me, the birth of this Sharon-the-sharpshooter idea came from a rather poor, and certainly not remarkable shot. I get the male cops were all impressed, but that is kind of a guy thing. Isn't Sharon supposed to be above that macho nonsense?

Sorry to be long-winded. Hopefully all of those with Sharon-shrines in their homes just stopped reading.
I'm just tired of the superhero-among-much-lesser-beings thing. Can't we ever give a little competence and credit to the rest of the team?

Loved it! Awesome as usual. I really hope you have more of these locked away. Still would give my eye teeth for a continuation of the last story when Sharon was about to rip Mark Hickman a new one. He was the perfect foil for her and Andy both to spar with.
