Triclopes chapter 104 . 5/28 Kazuichi calling Allen the "Foreign guy" is going to be the trope to Allen in the series. PS: I finally got around to reading the Tokyo Ghoul manga series for the first time. My reaction? It was good. In the manga, the main plot is told to gain a better understanding and the antagonists of the series are clearly defined with their motives. During my reading of the series, I decided to take a trip down memory lane and scour the internet trying to find the original story manuscripts that were originally intended to be shown in Tokyo Ghoul's second season adaptation ROOT /A. There had been one version of the manuscripts I've seen before that had the full story board laid out with the concept art and translated lines from the scenes where Ken Kaneki worked with Aogiri along with some scenes taken from the manga, in a sense making them complete. I was wanting to use this version for a FanFiction I have in the works including characters from Tokyo Ghoul among other series's that I am going to include. Unfortunately, I've only recovered some of the rough concept drafts and translated dialogue. I'm still going to keep looking so I can tell the complete untold story, along with the re-imagined plot of the ROOT /A anime and points that were covered in the manga. As for the manga itself? Like I said before, it was good. But I wouldn't call it "THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD!" or "THE BEST VERSION OF TOKYO GHOUL!" Granted it certainly covers what the anime was SUPPOSED to cover with a more coherent story. However, beyond some nitpicks at the illustrations and fight scenes. I guess my 1 major gripe I actually have with the story, is its sequel RE. I always enjoyed a story surrounding a Investigator from Tokyo Ghoul, especially when getting into Kotarou Amon or Haise Sasaki. Watching a Ghoul as an investigator take on cases surrounding other Ghouls. It always had a Batman, Blade Runner, Hellsing vibe to it. One I deeply appreciated. And a part of me can't help but feel how Tokyo Ghoul could've lived up to big titles like Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass, Attack on Titan, or even Hellsing, given how many similarities it had with all those series's. In fact, Sui Ishida always made it a point to have some kind of symbolic reference to reflect on the main plot of the story. But every time I saw the comparison, it never stuck to me in any meaningful way I felt it should have. The bulk of the story is a psychological horror thriller, that's where the teeth of the story is and it's where Sui Ishida shines, but I often feel that those minor aspects of the story, which is supposed to give us the growth of the characters, always overshadow the rest of the story and Sui Ishida doesn't see the opportunity to implement a plot twist or give us any major development to build off of until long after the fact. I see that most of the time the plot of the story itself is forced to be figured out and rationalized by the reader himself when the story is supposed to be told, not the other way around. Most of the story by that point had to be explained through either fan theories or speculation when a plot development needed to be shown to us so we can understand the greater context of what happened. There are even times that Sui Ishida's own art style even further adds the fuel to some of these issues, with his illustrations either not being detailed enough or being misrepresenting to the development of the plot in the story. Not to say that some of the fans who assume their theories to be fact also kind of ruin there own experience because of their refusal to follow the story instead of their own assumptions. I feel that Sui Ishida could've done a better job in keeping the readers grounded to the main plots of the story but also pique their speculation in tandem. As a result of Sui Ishida failing to give suitable attention to characters like Rize and Kaiko (Vaskie as a whole) this resulted in a giant portion of the plot to story to be overlooked, therefore all the while RE gives us a mostly uncovered picture the devil in the details remain obscured by the covers, as Kaiko and Vaskie were intended to be the central threat and were even built up as much, but failed to live up to anticipation and didn't even make the cut as the main threat it was supposed to in the end. I have no problem that he made Kichimura Washuu aka Nimura Furuta as the central antagonist if that's what Sui had in mind, but Kichimura's motivations as the main antagonist seem underwhelming considering the position he was given and at the end of the story, we're basically given the discovery that EVERYTHING that happened to Ken was just one long stroke of bad luck and that all of the conflicting factions of the series: Aogiri Tree, Vaskie, and Goat, had the same objective in wanting to start the Dragon Crisis Arc. Akihiro wanted to do it because he believed that by turning people into Ghouls and Dragons it would pave the way in the medical field to save life's and help evolve humanity into the perfect species, Kaiko wanted it to happen so he and Vaskie would become the perfect species and use the Dragons to bring about a new order under Vaskie's rule, Kishou/Eto/Aogiri wanted to do it to overthrow the Washuu clan and liberate the Ghouls from oppression and genocide, and Kichimura wanted to do it because... "Fuck it lets watch the world burn." It's just kind of hard to take the story seriously when literally EVERY FUCKING CHARACTER IS AFTER THE SAME ENDGAME! I mean, it kind of defeats the purpose of a conflict between these characters and factions AT ALL WHEN THEY'RE ALL GETTING WHAT THEY WANT BY THE END OF THE STORY. So why are they in conflict?! Honestly Tokyo Ghoul, specifically RE, feels like a watered down version of Attack on Titan. I mean hell, you can compare the Dragon story arc with the Marley story arc and they both are making similar conclusions but in 2 VERY divisive ways. The only difference is that Eren INTENTIONALLY became the antagonist to try to achieve Eldia's freedom, while Ken just created a new species more dangerous than Ghouls to take the heat off of them. By the end of Tokyo Ghoul: RE all the factions got what they wanted, there was no other reason to fight other than to defend themselves from Dragon monsters, but in Attack on Titan's current story Arc, there's still a defined threat, shifts in allegiances, question of morality, a battle between 2 major ideas that have since been the plot of the manga between how far are you willing to go for freedom? And are you willing to become a Monster to achieve a better world? Although these 2 concepts are proposed in both respective series's, the conclusions most likely could be very different. One being a monster to achieve a better world and the other giving the means to make more monsters to save the few. Tokyo Ghoul does well as a stand alone story for Ken's journey and I feel it completed his story when the series ended, RE should've had a new Protagonist like Kuki Urie or Genshi Sherizu and made the series about THEIR stories and how they intended to upset the current cycle of violence and retribution to create a better society for all, reflecting on their personal stories and motivations for their objective in the end. Questioning the society they were brought up to think in accordance with. That is why Tokyo Ghoul: RE FAILS in telling the story that Sui Ishida set up in the original series. And why it perpetually feeds my discontent with the ending we were given. |

Triclopes chapter 100 . 3/2 So... Did Ken eat Yamoori's Kakuho or did Touka and Allen's presence prevent him from being the Eye Patch we saw from the manga/season 2 anime? Also did Allen just run into his old girlfriend because he saw the female presumably hold a familiar Quinque? And as a result of Touka and Allen literally facing off against Jason, would that effect Ken's Eye Patch character in any way. (would he stay the same prior to the torture/would he change after the torture?) PS: Sorry if I misspelled some of the names or the Kagune organ, it's been awhile since I've reread/watched anything Tokyo Ghoul related. |
Triclopes chapter 98 . 2/1 I get the feeling Koutaro was helping the CCG track Allen, there is no way he would've forgiven anyone for killing Mado THAT quickly. |
