I really love your plot and storyline as well as having the OC not be the deputy. I also love Mary being a woman of color because not many authors have OC of different ethnicities unless it's reader insert with all the Y/N, Y/L/N, etc.
I look forward to the next chapter especially the consummation of the marriage and what plans await. Mary in the bible became pregnant with God's son Jesus and was informed by the angel Gabriel in her dream. She was also stoned for being pregnant out of wed-lock even if she was still a virgin.
Will they drug Mary with bliss and John will be Gabriel in that situation? Was her running away being her stoning? I'm on the edge of my seat.

I was so excited to see the email notification for this story in my inbox! I saved it so I could read it after working today, and it was definitely worth the wait!
First off, we meet Joseph (and Jacob and John, though more in passing)! I know the interaction is minimal (and I cannot wait for the next chapter to see a full conversation between them!) but it's already got me on the edge of my seat wanting to know how it goes.
I loved the short exchange between John and Jacob, where you've hinted that Mary's arrival was expected, and when this was further enforced by Anne towards the end of the chapter. Another aspect I can't wait to see furthered was Mary's initial feeling for Joseph, despite her trying to reason it to something else (denial of feelings and then finally acceptance is honestly one of my favourite tropes in fanfic!)
Also I could picture literally every detail about what was happening in this chapter, especially since I've finally got around to watching the short movie (which is now on both YouTube and Prime, so I've been watching it fairly regularly on both!).
Honestly, I absolutely loved this chapter, and fully believe that I'll be saying the same thing for all the chapters to come! It's such a good idea for the story, and your writing is absolutely brilliant. I hope things calm down for you at work soon!
