Shinovii chapter 15 . 4/3/2019 (Review initially typed on March 24, 2019) About a week ago, I found out that the 24th is the anniversary of Wyomingparmesan's multi-chapter fic, Unexpected. With that in mind, I decided to read the entire story before this momentus occasion began, something she thought would be a lot to do in a week's time. Challenge accepted! The following review is the result of that weeklong session. Unexpected tells the story of Lori Loud as she finds herself pregnant after a wonderful night with Bobby. Throughout the fic, she goes through the many changes in her life that comes with carrying a child. From her being scared of telling anyone to massively loving support from her family, close friends, and the love of her life and his family, it's clear that Lori's life would no longer be the same as it was before. Is she ready for her newfound life as an expecting mother, let's find out! This...is...amazing! From beginning to end, I freaking loved this fanfic! Every chapter detailed Lori's pregnancy very well, making me feel more and more invested as I kept reading. It highlights the initial fear one would have when they find out they're having a kid so early on, showing Lori extremely worried about how everyone will handle the news. I loved the close moments between Lori and Rita, seeing how Rita was the best (albeit obvious) choice to help Lori throughout her term. Not only that, but I must applaud one thing about this fanfic that helped make me love it more: the attention to detail! The level of research done to accurately showcase Lori's pregnancy is incredible, and the level of effort shown by this author to make it so is a huge sign of dedication to her work. I must say that it gave readers a nice learning experience on top of enjoying a well-written story. Unexpected also touches on the relationship between Lori and her family and close friends over the course of her term. Lori being with child was a lot to take in, but the overwhelming excitement was more than enough to overshadow the shocking news. Even when the Santiagos and Casagrandes found out, the love and support was massive, even from the person responsible for all this, Bobby. I always figured Bobby was gonna be excited about being a father, but having read the lengths he went through to be there for Lori highlights the determined nature of his character that we've seen in canon. However, there are some who have their worries about Lori having a kid, which has resulted in angsty, somber, heartwarming, and overall feels-heavy moments. There's also the shipteasing between two very well-liked pairings that added to all the hearstring tugging. A nice touch, I'm sure. The later half of Unexpected builds up the late stages in Lori's pregnancy, leading up the moment of childbirth. With each chapter detailing the final months, I was left wondering what'll happen next for Lori. Eventually, I found myself at the final chapter, and was hit with "loads" of painful, yet heartwarming moments up to the big payoff at the end: the birth of Lori and Bobby's baby! 15 chapters of a long journey that results in a new life coming into the world. What really helped cap off this wonderful fanfic was Lori's words to her kid at the end. I...I was moved! And that was "Unexpected" in my non-spoilerish way! I'm so glad I got to read such a well-written, well thought out, and well researched fanfic, and for it to be my first fanfic review is a massive plus! Wyomingparmesan, you have done an amazing job having written this incredible, heartwarming, and thoughful story! You most certainly deserve all the praise and admiration that comes to your work, and I hope Unexpected becomes an inspiration to many aspiring writers who decide to read it! Thank you oh so much, and Happy Unexpectaversary! |
scumfuckflowergirl chapter 15 . 4/2/2019 Well, where do i start with everything I have to say about this. I decided to give your story a try since I follow you on twitter and saw you tweeting about it multiple times. I don't usually read fanfics dealing with topics like this and I was interested in what you had to offer. And... I have to say my reaction to this story was... unexpected (pun intended) I'll start with the good stuff about this story (which honestly I hope it was more): -Probably the best thing about all of this is the treatment you have of Lobby, you really did nail the moments those two had, they felt extremely natural and were cute as hell. -Subtle Ronniecoln appearances, I liked how in the last chapters the girls were trying to pair them up and how everybody was shipping them. -You mentioned my favorite ship on the show, Lucky, which I appreciate. -Lisa's scenes were most of the time hilarious and on point, specially the one when she founds out Lori is pregnant. -Lusam was treated on a good way, and I liked how you handeled that and loved the names they called each other. And well, that's all for the good stuff. Now, the things I didn't like: -Lori seemed convinced right away to have a baby (being only worried about it the first chapter). Which, at least for me, felt unnatural, since she is such a young person and is probably not mentally prepared to have a baby. I know that some people who get pregnant young want to still keep the baby, of course, but I felt that she needed to be more worried about that, since it can change your life drastically. Which leads to the point that she is never worried about what she might do with school or her future, thing that probably most girls in that situation would question inmediately. And even when this situations are going to be adressed in the story, the characters just decide to leave them in standby and forget about it and not mention them again. -Excesive Lily screentime, which didn't add anything to most of the plot. Also it got annoying all the praising she got, mostly from people that weren't from the family. -Gender roles are all over the place at times when they refer to the gender of the baby, and that can really bother people like me that are constantly trying to make them dissappear of our society. Really, gender does not matter for the clothes you're gonna get a baby, and it is XXI century, that "blue for boys, pink for girls" thing is EXTREMELY outdated. The baby of course won't care about the clothes he or she wears, and this asociation of certain colors for genders shows up in this fic at times, and it feels completely unnecesary. -There is a lack of conflict and an extreme romantization of the topic. As I said before, there are some young people that get pregnant that want to keep their babies, but I know that there are other cases that definitely do not want to, such as when girls get raped or get pregnant and live in very poor life conditions. I'm not asking you to treat this issues, but in this fic it seemed like every pregnancy is beautiful, and I know for real experiences that some people had told me that it can be very hard to deal with, specially if you don't want the baby but have to have it for reasons that of course I cannot address here. There was an extreme sense of everything being "perfectly fine" and that did not seem natural at all. -Out of character behaviours all over the place. The loud family seemed WAY too nice. I know Lincoln is a comprehensive and overall a nice supportive boy, but he felt VERY nice for his standards in this fic. The same happens for Lori, I know that she can be maternal and very caring of her siblings, but really, some actions like the thingy she does at the night to check on every sibling seemed very weird and unrealistic. I am the oldest sibling myself and never did that. She got mad very few times and I felt that was unnatural too, she seemed to nice for her standards at times. Leni while her niceness was ok and was realistic, did not do enough silly things, and that fell flat. Very weird to see Lana actually EMBRACING being cute, something that she certainly would never ever do on the show, and would really get mad when called "cute" like all the time she was in this story. Lisa getting excited about being an aunt was also very unnatural. Ronnie Anne was also way too loving for her standards, and this shows on the scenes she has with Lori. -Everybody seemed to love the baby when it was growing and seemed to understand everything about the ultrasounds or that. As a person who got to see multiple people of my family environment pregnant, it took me YEARS to understand where the head was on the ultrasounds or whatever they are called. Also call me unsensitive or weird, but I never in my life got as excited as most were on this fic about the baby. Neither have most of the kids of my family, so that also felt, at least for me, unrealistic. -The "Slut-Shaming" of that scene with Carol and Nicole wasn't very nice to watch. I know that you needed to add a conflict but really, this portrayal of mean girls is outdated, and brings a bad image of girls being sexually free. Which I think it's done in other ways on the fic, since you made Lori have intercourse with Bobby only once, and then got her pregnant, which I think is rather unrealistic, and with the love they show to each other, they have certainly had sex more than once, of course you don't need to show that, but it would be nice if it was implicit. -Most of "affirmations" made in this fic were really subjective, and out of this situation could be extremely wrong. For example, when you say that living in a big family guarantees hugs and that you would never feel alone. I can assure you, as a person who lives in a rather big family (i dont have much people living in my house, but have a lot of cousins and second cousins and all that), that that's not true. The feeling of being alone is much deeper than that, and I felt that multiple times despite having a big family. If you want examples of that in the show, you only have to watch Lucy at times, she expresses multiple symptoms of a person that feels alone, and it is very easy to notice, specially in the first season. And we don't hug that much, I can assure you. Also the affirmations about pregnancy and that "having someone that needs your protection is the best feeling", despite having the possibility of being true for some people, seem also pretty subjective and can definitely not apply to some people. -You made some scenes that was very obvious that were done in order for the reader to feel "emotional". And... again you can call me unsenstive, but honestly that didn't work for me and I felt no attachment about what most of the time was happening. Excepting some of the shipping scenes, as I mentioned before. -Exaggerated demonization of behaviours that teenagers do occasionally. This is explicitly shown with all the drama involving Luna. Drinking alcohol once while being less than 21 (or 18 for my country) seems portrayed like a "sin" and honestly is much more normal than that, more coming from a character like Luna. If you were to shown how "irresponsible" she is, you could have used a more extreme example that would have been more believable such as, idk, getting completely wasted on the house of a person that she didn't know. Just saying. Well i think that's all. I apologize for extending myself so much, but I wanted to make a few points clear. Im not doing this in order to attack you or get you offended, or to make you have a distaste for your own story or making you erase it, Im just doing this because most reviews here were prasing the fic and I wanted to give another point of view. I know you have potential, and your writing style while for me very simple, is very easy to understand to most audiences. But I feel that this fic could have been done in a better way, idk I just feel that. Wish you luck and best wishes. SFFG |
meowloudly15 chapter 15 . 11/15/2018 I decided to binge this story tonight because I wanted to understand why you're such a well-known author. I'm just gonna say here, this story was... ...UNEXPECTED. (YEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHH) It was really cool seeing how your writing style, and even the way in which you presented yourself to the readers in your A/Ns changed drastically and yet stayed the same at its core. Your characterisation of everybody remained on point, even in the beginning. (Leni is a cinnamon roll, I agree. And you really made me appreciate Lana's cuteness.) You handled a serious subject with grace and excellence. It fits with the show near-perfectly. In essence, you wrote a really cool story. I'm glad I took the time to read it. Keep up the great work! |
