gothicbutterfly95 chapter 13 . 12/8/2018 Beautiful epilogue. Love that they didn't go seeking Eliza out, but just came upon her by chance. That reunion was just wonderful; from Laurens wondering what her hope was for, to realising it was Eliza, to that brilliant speech that truly told her he was Laurens. His congratulations for her about the orphanage, and telling her Alexander would be proud. Love that Laurens was actually okay to stay in France, given that everything he had in his life was there, but promised Eliza that he would try to write. The way she snapped at him, saying he was a grown man who didn't have to worry about his father was great. Beautiful story. Well done. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 12 . 12/7/2018 Just like with Reynolds Pamphlet, it was great to see the news from Laurens' POV. Love that Lafayette brought it to him, and that Hercules was the one that sent it to him. Love Lafayette trying to calm John down as he just keeps lashing out, saying he could not understand. That no one could. But Lafayette knows exactly who would understand. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 11 . 12/7/2018 Beautiful indeed. And heartbreaking. Alex's thoughts on Philip were just...tears my heart out. I love that Alex begged John to wait til he received another letter before writing back; he already knows he's running out of time and doesn't want to make it even worse. Burning the letters was perfect; not just as a parallel to Eliza's actions, but for the same reasons; no one can know. The line about Eliza being obsessed with legacies just as much as he was was a great touch, as was leaving the final letter from Burr behind. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 10 . 12/7/2018 Oh here we go... That final line from Philip: 'You' was so powerful. Alex regretting giving him the gun as soon as he had was perfect, as was the way he prepped Philip for what would happen, and convinced himself over and over that everything would be okay... The letters were great, happy news about their families, but still full of the dark events in their lives. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 9 . 12/7/2018 Nice. It was nice to see The Reynolds' Pamphlet get out there from John's perspective. Love how his first reaction was to see how long ago it had been written, to see if he could try and stop it somehow, and after that, how he knew it wasn't a good idea to say anything, because Angelica would do that. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 8 . 12/7/2018 Very good. Alex's letter to John was perfect, ranting about Jefferson and Madison, and now John Adams. The line about the nation crumbling like a pastry was a great one. The 'We Know' scene was great; though I will say there wasn't any mention of him paying James before this. I mean, we all know he did it, but in terms of this story, it just came out of the blue. Minor, minor nitpick aside, you did a great job expanding the song into the scene, especially that moment between Alex and Burr about how he kept his secret, so Burr would do the same for him. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 7 . 12/7/2018 Completely full of letters. I like it. Love how loving and supporting John can be, even while reprimanding Alexander, and knowing his friend was unlikely to have ended things. Interesting point about how Laurens is not a faithful man, but still wants Alex to do the right thing. Alexander's reply was just as great; sad about Lafayette but happy that everyone else escaped, honoured that John named his son after him, and acknowledging that he cannot blame his letters on lack of sleep. The opening lines about how he would not mind waiting to hear from Laurens was great. And then, the legacy. Of course. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 6 . 12/7/2018 And there we go... This is very complicated isn't it; with the lovely little love pentagon we have here. I was wondering whether this would happen, and now that it has, I'm even more interested. But you did do this scene very well. I know absolutely nothing about the real Maria Reynolds, but I love that you gave her a daughter in this. This happened pretty much exactly as I pictured it; 'dear', 'sweetheart'; no wonder Maria made a move. Also interesting that it happened all at Alexander's house, rather than Maria's. Alex briefly feeling guilty about what he was doing to Eliza whenever he wrote to John or Angelica, but realising Maria had made it official, and so much worse, was great. Also liked how he didn't even know her name until she left. The letter from Laurens at the beginning was great: 'I am blushing, sir' |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 5 . 12/7/2018 Short and sweet. John's letter was wonderful. His situation with his family (his daughter) especially was perfect for the situation, but beautiful. His comments on finding out the likes of John Laurens is your father, and how Frances is exactly what he needs was great. And now you have me wondering...'Take A Break' is clearly coming up, but Alex's is wondering about French summers...I'm interested in how this is going to play out. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 4 . 12/7/2018 Oh, how much replacing Angelica's name with Laurens' can do... And you haven't gotten rid of Angelica, but it works all the same. And even with Alexander knowing there were two people out there who loved him, feels sad that he can't spend more time with Eliza; yet knowing he'd been abandoning his work if he did, and still feeling guilty about it. Exactly what he would feel. Oh, Philip is just too adorable. I love Alexander asking why Philip would give him a present, considering it was his birthday, and Philip just giggling. Alex and Eliza's response to Philip asking for a little brother was brilliant. Love Alexander asking if they were going to try that already when Eliza came up to him was brilliant. And you called their daughter Angie. I love that (we need some way to distinguish between her and her aunt). Especially if she's about to arrive. Great job |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 3 . 12/7/2018 I really like how the story is almost completely told in the letters - very fitting for Alexander. Alex's letter to Laurens' was wonderful, starting off furious, almost like he was venting, but telling his friend how truly happy he is to find out he survived. The way he was so overcome that he let the letter burn, but then didn't mind when he found it was illegible was great; again not going overboard with his relationship with John. His messages about Eliza and Philip to both him and Lafayette were wonderful, and it is perfect that he doesn't want to tell Eliza, given everything. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 2 . 12/7/2018 Lovely. Alexander would definitely bury himself in his work after losing everyone; but I love that he's still kind to Eliza, at the same time knowing she deserves more. 'Laff's letter was great (love that Alexander called him that), worried about his friend, but giving him the benefit of the doubt, just like Alexander had, about why he hadn't replied. Laurens' letter being so short was great. He was insistent, like Lafayette said, but also knows he cannot say too much. |
gothicbutterfly95 chapter 1 . 12/7/2018 Interesting set-up here. I love that you included the lines from 'Tomorrow There'll More of Us' at the beginning. I think you did a great job explaining Alexander's relationship with Laurens, without going overboard on exactly what it could've been. Eliza's thoughts on her husband were perfect, and I love the touch of Alex saying thank you after she'd already gone. Lafayette's letter was great (that is one heck of a name; I can see why he just goes by Lafayette), asking him about freedom, while he's over in France while tensions are high. His questions about the baby, and his jab at Alexander were great, and only mentioning Laurens in that final line was perfect. Love how, even though Alex is furious, and shoves the letter away immediately, he is touched by how Lafayette does care, and gives him the benefit of the doubt about what he could've meant. |
AwkwardJello chapter 13 . 8/29/2018 I loved this story so much! It was so sad but so beautiful at the same time! Thank you for writing this! |
AlexAndYunai chapter 6 . 1/7/2018 I love it! you are a very talented author and it's easy to be captured in your story. I can't wait until you continue the story! |
