There was once this movie on Netflix, I can't remember what it was called, but it was really good. It was a while ago, so the story is kinda fuzzy, but I know there were selkies in it. According to that movie, whoever captured the skin of the selkie pretty much owned it, but if they got the skin back, they were gone forever. There was this guy and he found the skin of a selkie and he fell in love with her. They ended up getting married and they lived together for years and had a ton of kids. One day, the guy was out on some sort of business trip or something and one of the kids went up to her mamma-selkie and asked, "Mamma, why does Papa keep a seal skin hidden under the roof?" So Selkie went and got her skin and went back to the sea. The guy returned and his wife was gone and he was super sad.
But that was just a story the grandfather was telling the main character girl. See, years ago, the girl's little brother had floated out to sea because his cradle had been left too close to the water when the tide came in. There had been strange sightings of a little naked toddler running around on the island they lived on. Turns out, the toddler was her brother and the selkie had been taking care of him.
At least, I'm pretty sure that's what happened.
