I like it a no nonsense street-smart and tuff Naruto who hopefully is NOT in all orange. When he joins the academy and starts to learn I hope you have him take it seriously. He should want to learn all he can to protect himself.

He should figure out his teachers are not teaching him right. As he has already started to "not rat-out" who is in his fights maybe he can find a teacher or someone from a fight and follow some non clan members home and "borrow" some of the scrolls they have. One of these could be about chakra control to help him and cause him to ask his Jiji about why he cant do a clone right. Maybe the Hokage gives him another clone to do. Or tells him to just make more to blow off more chakra and also not use hand signs wasting a LOT more chakra helping them look right. He shold definatly keep it a secret until the test though.

I would also have him learn meditation which would keep his anger in check leading to meeting the fox. Once over the shock he could just thank him for helping him get strong. I think his never back down attitude and personality would impress it and might lead to a grudging respect. He could start to learn how to project Killer Intent or maybe gets his senses enhanced.

He should find a kindred spirit in Anko too. She is ostracized and also tough and doesn't take shit from anybody. She might find him training one of the scrolls in the forrest of death and help him out sparking a friendship. She doesn't have to do much at first just correct his stances in taijutsu or offer some small tips on jutsu.

Anyway I hope you like some of my ideas and I look forward to more!
