I like the flow of your prose. It's very easy to sink into and just enjoy.
Your main character has me chewing my lip in worry and pity and frustration, though. She's but a caged bird currently, not to mention vulnerable and defenseless in the face of an attack, and that's just...saddening.
But I'm intrigued, and eager to see how you develop this.

It is sad she was practically locked in the fort to provide information,as well as the loneliness (how much she desired to be at or at least see from her window the ceremony!) since Will and Elizabeth's lives didn't allow them to be more with her and her only company was James, Groves and Gilette when it was business. Has James provided any sort of education for her all these years? Does she feel any bitterness of the way she is living? Looking forward for the continuation.
