I'm not familiar with "A Kingdom of Dreams," but I felt like this piece brought up a real issue that a lot of people face today - domestic violence. I felt really bad for Samantha, but I think what might evoke even more sympathy for her would be adjusting this chapter to do more showing than telling. Right now, the majority of this section just tells us what's going on instead of showing us how Samantha feels about it and how she responds to the abuse.
