AH! I really want to know what Valjean does to help Javert! Great story

This story is amazing! The characters emotions are so real and you really captured their personalities! Excellent work!

You are very on point with the characters and what they would think and feel. It is amazing.

Love the interaction between Javert and Marius, I was laughing at of the conversation. :)

I like the early mention that Javert doesn't want Valjean to be seen chasing after him just before his death. It feels just considerate enough for that character. I think that as this chapter goes on, though, Valjean's insistence on following him/staying with him and Javert's attempts to get rid of him get a little too silly. They remind me of the scenes in The Odd Couple where Oscar has to keep Felix from trying to kill himself in various funny ways. It felt a little out-of-place for Les Mis.

I really enjoyed the opening of this chapter. The bit where they cross the Seine and Valjean grips Javert's arm is really well-done - brief but so intense. I also love him falling asleep almost as soon as he sits down. The slow-burning suspense at the end really brought me to the edge of my seat, wondering whether Javert would get away out the back door, and where he would go if he did. Curious to see what happens next - and how ironic that Valjean is the one chasing down Javert now!

I love the interaction between Valjean and Javert here. Their struggle for the gun is over quickly enough, but it takes them longer to struggle with Javert's intentions, his reasons for wanting to committ suicide, and what to do next. Some of my favorite bits: Valjean's reaction when Javert points out that he was willing to die at the barricades, Valjean's willingness to be rearrested, Javert bursting out that "the law is mistaken" (his anger and bewilderment really come through there), and both of them struggling not to cry.

Oh, this chapter is just so good and so intense. I really loved the opening scenes - they made me so curious to know what Javert was up to while burning the midnight oil. It wasn't until you broke down the arrangement of things on his desk that I realized what he was planning to do, and that really brought me to the edge of my seat. The bit with him wishing that he'd died back on the barricades hit me right in the feels. How lucky that Valjean came to his rescue... and how like Javert to scorn being rescued by Valjean of all people. Curious to see what will happen to these two next.

Oy. Poor Valjean. How very tone-deaf of Marius and Cosette to spring Javert on him without any warning. While they could both be oblivious in canon, I think this chapter might be pushing that to an OOC degree, especially on Cosette's side. "where do you know each other from?" when she of all people knows Valjean's secrecy about his side and how unlikely he would be to answer this, especially in front of all three of them.

I did really like Javert's sarcasm after they leave the room - I lol'ed at "they seem simply crushed by your presence" and a few other lines. I think Javert gives him a talking-to that he really does need, but Cosette and Marius made me cringe a little.

I think in this chapter, the conversation between Javert and Marius does get a little too talky, but I enjoyed the contrast between Marius's earnest nature vs. Javert's brusque one, and his grimacing over telling Marius how to avoid arrest. I admire how close you're staying to brick-verse by bringing up the Gorbeau House attack, and I loved the scene between Javert and Cosette - you capture her personality so well there.

Oh, this chapter was such a great read the whole way through. I'm really impressed with the way you write the conversation between Javert and Marius: it's so smooth that it never feels long or talky. Their talking around each other - how Javert think Marius doesn't know Valjean was a bread-thief, Marius thinks Javert doesn't know he "stole" Madeleine's fortune - is so funny, and I really love Javert telling him off. Sorry, Marius, but "you absolute idiot" is exactly what you needed to hear. I like that you depict him as freckled, lanky Eddie Redmayne, too. :) I hope we'll see Valjean and Cosette reunite next!

This is such a great first chapter. It's always nice to get a story where Javert redeems himself rather than committ suicide. I love his encounter with Valjean here - how he immediately recognize his voice, then his face, then his face, how he debates over what to do, how of course he still remembers Valjean's address. I also love the way you write Javert's concern for him; he cares enough to take him all the way home and try to find help, yet he also practically throws Valjean into the chair, "glad to finally be free of him." That captures a lot of Javert's personality.

It's so sad that Valjean "has aged at least a decade or two" so quickly - I'm assuming that his cutting Cosette and Marius out of his life has taken its toll. I'm so curious to see what happens when Javert meets Cosette - perhaps he can pull off a reconciliation?
