American Ishida chapter 1 . 6/19/2017
Not understanding what exactly Kuro week was, I had to look it up. I was surprised to see a whole "fanzine" dedicated to Voltron: Legendary Defenders. There were many prompts that were surprising to see, especially day 3's "Reflection/mirror". Well, enough of that tangent. The prompt for this story is "madness" and it details Shiro's descent into madness. What I liked about this story is that it portrays Shiro for what he is: a human being with problems. That might be too much of a simplification, but I see it to be true. Shiro went through a traumatizing situation and is afraid to talk about it. He is the leader of Voltron. He must be strong, adept, and disciplined. He can't afford to show his weakness. So it only makes sense that he couldn't bring himself to tell everyone that he was screaming, begging, and crying. He cannot worry everyone because it would bring down the morale of the team. However, that decision backfires on him.

The decision to remain silent backfiring is not only a clever choice, but a choice that remains true to the original characters and their personalities. While Shallura is a fan made "OTP", it is still an interesting one because not only is it plausible, but a story like this stays true to who these characters are. Shiro respects Allura, and vice versa. So when he says that he should have killed himself and that he probably deserved what happened to him, it feels like something he would say. Allura's anger at him for not understanding his own worth and pushing him towards the wall also feels like something she would say. It's a positive that I can read these lines they have in the voices from the show and it feels natural.

My favorite line from this story is where it says, "Shiro heard her words but hearing and 54 days (and counting) of believing were two different monsters." Why do I like this? Maybe because it's a really well written line. Maybe it's because I personally feel the same way too. I don't have the right to feel the same way he does because I haven't gone through an experience like he did. But then again, what does it matter? This is not about me, this about Shiro. You have a good story here. The choice to make this all an illusion is a clever choice as well. Keep it up.

You've done such a great job with this in just one day! I liked how it kept me waiting for the "madness" to manifest and at the end I realized that's what it's been all along, that the whole thing was a hallucination. It was a really cool way to use the prompt! I also loved the little snapshots of the other Paladins, and the tiniest klance handhold ;) The part where you describe how Shiro liked being shoved against the wall by Allura was awesome. It was subtle but showed his yearning for her really well~
