Reviews for The Misadventures of Wes Weston
Justice of the Martyred chapter 32 . 6/1
Ok, major props to you as a writer. You effectively took an OC and fit them into the Danny Phantom universe, even if that OC was based on a one-off background character from the show. It might also be that I'm that same sort of insane as Wes, but your storytelling really made me empathize more with the struggles of Wes than Danny. Most likely because it's relatively easier to picture myself in the same condition as Wes as an observer to a hero, than to Danny who was granted powers and is undoubtedly a hero.

It's definitely nice that you take into account the real-world consequences of some of Wes's actions. However, I feel on Wes it certainly seems a lot more would be done given just how frequent and verbal Wes was with his harassment. After reading some of the deleted scenes, it definitely seems you've put some thought into this sort of thing. Wes breaking into the Fenton's home would have been almost as extreme as the murder given the context available to someone outside the loop.

I love the characterization. Both Wes and Danny being somewhat immature fits well with their status as teenagers, and the continuation of the plot for your story dependent on some of their immaturity. That Wes refuses to even think on deeper motivations as to why Danny would keep his secret beyond the high school social benefits certainly says a lot about the scope of what he views as the world and the other people in it. Danny is mature in that he handles his burden while minimally burdening others, but immature in that his retaliatory pranks are based on the hope Wes would get the message and stop. Based on what I've seen of your characterization of Danny, it isn't likely Danny thought through more viable methods of getting Wes to stop in the long term. Negative discouragement was not working to stop Wes, so selfish was his goal, that a reevaluation of his motives and their broader consequences was not happening if Wes himself was the one getting punished. Seeing that you're keeping the story somewhat canonical I could only see a few outcomes.

This kind of cat-and-mouse would continue until Disasteroid or some other planned reveal, and then Wes is either vindicated or vilified for his actions trying to expose Danny. Or Wes is incapable of dealing with Danny either by incarceration, school transfer, or death before the Danny's reveal (whether he comes back as a ghost in the last scenario is an interesting path). Or Danny finds another way to get Wes to think things through such as revealing why it would be dangerous for the secret to be revealed, or in showing his own struggles. How it would lead to this last option is beyond me at the moment.

In any case, whether it turns out as I predicted or in some other way I did not, I look forward to it, but not as much as the story that it takes to get there. So, I look forward to when the next chapter comes out, and every chapter until you've reached the end of the arc.

Someguy the anon chapter 32 . 4/12
I wonder is Wes is gonna kill himself?
Kind of funny if he turns into a ghost and becomes even more addled about proving exposing ghost hybrids.
Make his special ghost powers that he can tank anti-ghost technology that is wholly human based, like blood flowers or whatever.

Oh no! I caught up! This has been a total thrill ride. This is the fic I've been looking for! For such a popular guy, there are not a lot of Wes fanfics out there in the world. Thanks so much for all your hard work! I hope you update again soon!

Dash was the best in this chapter XD

On the other hand, O think it's time to get serious, since the consequences are also getting more serious and some evaluation of morals is beginning to come into play. I'm still totally on Danny's side. Now, Danny's hasn't made things better, responding juvenily to Wes' antics, but I feel it comes from frustration at a powerlessness and seeming inability to do anything to stop Wes from harrassing him. After all, Danny is Wes' stalking victim, and no one's doing anything about it. After months, I imagine that would take some psychological toll.

I'm honestly surprised nobody's done anything about Wes' perpetual harrassment of a fellow student, even if it does consistently backfire. I work at a school, and normally the school would have conferenced with his Dad by now about his son's bizarre and upsetting behavior; the bathroom log, photos, baiting, and abusive and entrapping behavior towards on particular student who doesn't seem to have done anything except minor retaliation in response would be a pretty big deal. If it continued, the kid may be sent to psychological evaluation for emotional stability and, if found unable to function normally within the school without disruption to self or others due to psychological issues, would be sent to self-contained classes for students with behavioral issues (if they have them) or, if more extreme, would be sent to a different school.
Wes being secretly correct doesn't change the fact that he doesn't have any right to treat Danny this way; he's victimizing Danny as a way of dealing with his upset at others' bullying him due to his poor handling of a tiny joke (not to blame victim over bullying, because Wes didn't deserve to be put in a situation that made him uncomfortable, but Wes' reactions and poor/immature handling to a small joke have admittedly been half the force behind the escalation of his own harrassment). In a way it's telling that Wes feels more comfortable doubling down on harrassing Danny for "proof" rather than plotting how to deal with and subvert his growing reputation when he could; he's too prideful to admit what he's done is socially unacceptable and he feels bullying and harrassing Danny is still easier than confronting those who actually began Wes' own harrassment. And as nice as Sam's self-aware moment was after the poetry slam, Wes has the same problem: he dehumanizes Danny through his inability to evaluate Danny as a person with hardships and motivations for his generally good and heroic actions, and makes no attempt or consideration for Danny's life and situation, simply gets mad at Danny not doing what's convenient for Wes. He seems unable, so far, to empathize with anyone or understand or care that giving Wes validation and credibility he desires and is constantly harrassing Danny for would ruin Danny's life. As pathetic and sad as Wes' situation is, why should Danny throw himself under the bus that Wes has invited to run over him? Especially solely for Wes' convenience at Danny's grave expense?

*sigh* You'd think being a fan of Spiderman would clue Wes into why Danny isn't comfortable with telling people his identity. Wes is really self-centered to the point of ironic blindness, honestly...
PhantomOfProcrastination chapter 32 . 2/8
Oh. My gosh. Oh wow. This story is such a trip. I. Really love how Wes has felt repercussions from his Big Mistake️ and is trying to make more conscious decisions about his moves going forward. This story has grown into something so amazing and I'm so glad. Each update is a year added to my lifespan (and one less to Danny's lol) Thank you for the updates!
Jeff chapter 32 . 2/2
I’m in a love/hate relationship with Wes. Like, I love your cynical narration style with him, but JEEZUS CHRIST HE FUCKING OBSESSED—
Potkanka chapter 32 . 2/2
Nice to see Wes' little crisis about being a murderer because yeah, he was so damn lucky that he actually didn't become one, that's not something to just forget. It's definitely something to learn from though, think before acting, weight the possible outcomes of each plan.

And yay for another crisis right after, although a less morbid one! I feel kinda happy for him that he got it explained, even though that gives him even more weirdass info about the world, which might cause him to do stupid stuff again. But he clearly needs it, so yay for him getting an explanation for Phantom being seen in the past.

Though Danny mentioning alternate timelines might convince Wes that there is, indeed, a timeline where he killed Danny with the Blood Blossoms...

Anyway, seems like Wes is back in the game! What harebrained scheme might he try next?
orange cactus chapter 32 . 1/27
Ah, I realized I’ve missed quite a few chapters, and man did I apparently miss Wes lol
So glad to see him kinda get a bit better these last chapters, I remember his plans feeling almost too much for me
Poor adrenaline junkie, his drug of choice is conspiracy theories now XD
It was a pleasure to read!
