I loved this! I'm missing Bash on the show, but this helps. :)

I had to dig up my old login info so I could review your story and tell you how much I enjoyed it! For the longest time I couldn't even read fanfic because it just hurt too much. I haven't been here, or involved in the Reign/Mash fandom in any way, since 2014. I don't know what spurred me on to browse for new Mash fics, but I'm so glad to find a well-written fix-it set in the first half of season one (which is the only part of canon I will acknowledge. :))

My own "chosen" (heh) canon-divergence was in episode 6, but episode 5 certainly could've gone differently, if only the writers had allowed Mary to make smarter choices and see Francis and Bash more clearly. I love how you rewrote Mary's life path from there and suggested a brighter future in Scotland with Bash! Thank you for writing this Mary who's not blinded by childish infatuation. The way I see it, she was brainwashed since birth to think it was her duty and "destiny" to marry Francis - I really wanted her to wise up and grow up and break FREE, but of course that wasn't the story the showrunner was telling.

Anyway... YES to self-respecting, Francis-rejecting, Bash-appreciating Mary! You have rekindled my love for Mash and what could have/should have been. I like how you referenced things from later episodes too, like Bash and Francis fighting - with Mary stepping in and being more concerned for Bash and contemptuous of Francis, as she should be! (I could totally see hypocritical, sexist jerk Francis expecting a virginal bride and judging Mary a "whore", nevermind his own sexual history or unfaithful actions - I'll never forget how he spoke to her about Colin in the Pilot!) - and I love how you worked in Bash declaring his loyalty to Mary, not crown or country. *sniffle*

It's also great to see Bash being cheeky again, and Mary's playfulness too. Oh, and the way you portrayed her caring, kind-hearted, and down-to-earth side, having practical skills she learned in the convent - it was so nice to see her taking care of Bash... Now I feel like you've also fixed all the episodes where Bash was hurt (either physically or emotionally) and the show's writers wouldn't let Mary act like she cared. :( Alright, making myself sad again, better re-read your fic! And I'll have to read your other story too when I have more time - wow, 28 chapters...an epic! But I'm sure you did just as terrific a job rewriting history there. :)
