When you started with the Clark/Illyana pairing my reaction was 'what the heck?' For a character who has had no canon romantic relationships to be paired with Superman was weird, and the fact that she was only first coming back from Limbo and should have still been a little kid added an extra aspect of ickiness. But I gave it a chance and it became a surprisingly compelling relationship, especially with Illyana's self-doubts, lack of social skills, and self-loathing being handled so well.

While I agree that they should not have had a happy ending, I kind of feel that the way it should have had a more tragic ending with Illyana sacrificing herself rather than just a breakup. That's the real story with her character. No one, not even Superman, can save her and she and the readers know that she is destined for a sticky end.
