I think Caterpie is a perfect choice for the team if you're looking to build real character in them. Butterfree easily had the most complete story arc of all of the pokemon in Kanto (I'm not counting Charizard's story since that came full circle in the Orange Islands). Plenty of the other pokemon are much flatter and forgettable, I honestly can't remember anyone else except Bulbasaur and Squirtle off the top of my head and Squirtle is pretty forgettable.

So why haven't you returned? Its been 13 months! You a abandoned thi?

Gastly's personality is pretty solid too! I'm hoping this is the Haunter that eventually joins up with Ash's team.

That was adorable. Loved Pidgeotto's backstory and her mothering Pikachu.

No Frankenstein power-up for Pikachu then? Fair enough. I suppose Pikachu already experienced one painful power-up already :P While it was thematic enough, I kind of wished Ash had still lost his first gym battle and then come back even stronger.

Most fics have Pidgeotto acting as the Team Mom and I'm looking forward to your interpretation of her in the next few chapters.

I also like the symbiotic relationship you're implying in this chapter and that Pokemon understand that they can reach even greater heights with a trainer.

An ultra-rare Pokemon fic that seems like it'll be focused on story and not shipping or grimdark BS? Yes, please!

I do like the relationship between Ash and Gary in this story. While he's still a douche, he's nowhere near as bad as he was during his Indigo journey. And he also seems more mature as well, while still serving as a decent foil for Ash.

Nice job instilling some flaws in your characters as well. And Ash's inadequacy is rather understandable in this circumstance, since he's always been in Gary's shadow. Yet he's done little to even try to rectify that. For example, studying a bit before leaving for his journey would have helped out immensely.
