ReganX chapter 1 . 1/1/2017 This series is certainly well named. It was such a lovely surprise to find the alert for this story waiting in my inbox. I've been looking forward to reading this since I first read the introductory chapter for little Jemma and I'm delighted to say that it was well worth the wait. I wonder if Jemma has created the Fountain of Youth, or if she has inadvertently replicated the effects of the 084 that granted Skye's wish. Given that Skye was on her mind, it'd make sense to me that, if there was a part of Jemma that wished to redo her childhood, that thought may have been in her subconscious when she was exposed to the "cure". Jemma is so adorable and sweet, and her anxiety is heartbreaking. It's painful to think that anybody could bring themselves to be harsh and cruel with the poor little mite and, judging from the way some of little Jemma's nervous traits were echoed by adult Jemma when she was in trouble at the beginning of the chapter, it's still affecting her. I wonder if Fitz was given the wrong impression of her parents by Jemma, if they mellowed a lot in later years, or if she was so young when she went to college that she felt homesick, even if her home life was unpleasant. Even if she had a nanny or tutor or another relative who mistreated her, I don't think that it would account for all of the behaviour she's exhibiting, not if she was raised by kind parents. I hope that Fitz tells Bobbi what happened during the math quiz, if he hasn't already. She's going to need to know as much as she can if she is to be able to help Jemma. I can't imagine that the other adults will react well to hearing about it. In a way, Skye may be better placed to reassure Jemma that she's safe on the base than the adults are, as she will be able to tell her that none of them have ever spanked her for a wrong answer or for forgetting to do something. It might be easier for her to believe if it comes from another child. Despite his initial reaction to the thought of acquiring a kid, Hunter is proving to be wonderful with Jemma. I love the way he coaxed her out of hiding, tempted her with a snack she liked, and got her to laugh with his story. You did a very nice job capturing Skye's reaction to a new child on the base. On one hand, she's a compassionate child so she wants to make Jemma feel welcome, and comes up with ways she can do that. Her warning to May that she needed to be very nice to Jemma, with no getting mad was cute and funny but also quite wise, under the circumstances. I'd say that May could be intimidating to an already anxious child, even if the last thing she wants is to scare her. On the other hand, it's clear what a huge adjustment this is going to be for Skye, and I think that it's natural that she would resist sharing. I could see things like taking turns to choose movies, games or activities becoming a problem for her later. Jemma's presence is also bound to have an impact on Skye in other ways, especially in terms of the time she has with Bobbi. She's used to having Bobbi go to school with her but I'd say that, for the immediate future, Bobbi isn't going to be able to leave Jemma. When little Skye first joined the family, she thrived on having quality time with each of the team but I can't see little Jemma being able to cope with that. It'll take time for her to become comfortable with Bobbi caring for her, it'd be too much for her to be expected to have one to one time with a group of strangers. From little Skye's perspective, she's already lost a beloved playmate and big sister in the adult Jemma, so she may not take kindly to it if she thinks that little Jemma is monopolising Bobbi's time and attention on top of that. The adults would want to have a plan in place for what to tell the girls if their current stories fall apart. Skye may have just about bought the story about adult Jemma having to go on a trip just as a little girl who happens to have the same name showed up. However, she may grow suspicious if little Jemma tells her her surname or if she picks up on the physical similarities, not to mention similar accents. Two Jemmas may be just about believable but two Jemma Simmonses who look very alike, are both exceptionally clever, and have the same accent will be another story. As for little Jemma, it's 1993 from her perspective so they'll have some explaining to do if she spots a calendar and realises that it's now 2015, or if Skye mentions the other Jemma Simmons to her. Jemma and Bobbi's relationship has been the best part of a great chapter, from Bobbi's relatively gentle manner with adult Jemma at the beginning of the chapter to her care of the frightened, troubled little girl she didn't hesitate to take under her wing. My heart melted every time little Jemma responded positively to Bobbi, especially at the end of Day Two, when she gave her a hug. Sleeping little Jemma cuddling her new stuffed rabbit was also an "Aww!" moment. I really love Bobbi's line at the beginning: "No one wants to act according to what is more ‘convenient’ or beneficial for us. We would never turn our back on Skye, or on anyone on this team." I suspect that her words could be tested in the near future. Both Coulson and May have pointed out that Jemma is irreplaceable, possibly the best biochemist who ever lived. There's no question but that it would be more beneficial for S.H.I.E.L.D. to have Jemma back to work sooner rather than later. However, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s interests are at odds with adult Jemma's stated wish to have a second chance at her childhood, and quite possibly with little Jemma's best interests. Could Bobbi count on the support of the rest of the team if it fell to her to defend little Jemma's right to enjoy her second childhood? I can't wait to read more about Jemma, Bobbi, and the rest of the team. Happy New Year to you, and happy writing in 2017. :-) |

independentalto chapter 1 . 12/31/2016 I'm so excited that this was how I got to start off my new year. I've always loved the relationship Bobbi and Jemma have in your writings, because it can be interpreted in so many ways. Also, Skye is quite possibly one of the cutest kids one could ever have. Amazing work, as always, and can't wait to see more! |
