I still don't get how this whole thing works, or is supposed to work. Well there's shinigami and the death note (and the sword that's can supposed to cut steel with ease, and no I haven't forgotten that) so I'm fully aware this story isn't that realistic but still these so-called smart bullets are supposed to be current technology, and I really don't think you can integrate IR sensors to detect people's thermal signatures into something as small as a bullet with current technology. Not to mention an IR sensor with sufficiently high resolution will be essentially a camera and I don't think cameras have really good ballistic characteristics. Plus, if I remember correctly they can even recognize friendly thermal signatures and not shoot at them, this means there has to be a shit ton of neural network processing or whatever, i don't know the details but it's going to be somewhat similar to facial recognition which is based on neural networks. I don't think you can put an Nvidia Tesla GV100 inside a bullet, at least yet, or even an ARM processor. Or there's always the option of doing all the heavy lifting in the cloud, but even that option requires your bullets to connect to the internet, which still requires hardware larger than a 5.56mm bullet that's used in the AR15. The thing is at the end this isn't really required for the scenario, for example she can just aim at their legs instead of using the smart bullet system to target non vital areas. This also brings me to the problem that the bullets would still cause significant injury to their legs even if they are 'miniature bullets' unless even the propellant behind the bullet is limited, because the amount of energy given to the bullet depends on the amount of propellant burned and the distance the expanding gases get to push on the bullet, basically just the work done by the gases on the bullet. If you can excuse the fact that that's literally a 'the floor is made out of floor' statement, the energy doesn't depend on the mass of the bullet. A lighter bullet is actually going to be faster, which is going to increase the likelihood that it's going to go straight through them without actually depositing the Death Note fragments inside. Well this could be easily avoiding by using lower amounts of propellant so it isn't really a problem.
