so full disclosure

Since you last messaged me id actually gone ahead and re-read the entire fic for shitsngiggles.

And i totally understand what you mean when you say your writing style has changed. I wouldn't necessarily say writing ability has changed, since even the first chapters are just as engrossing as the rest, but there is a difference in how you write aspects. Like emotion. This chapter has a different, much more introspective feel to how Weiss is thinking when compared to previous chapters.

Speaking of, I really really liked where you took Weiss in this chapter. I think that Weiss's best canon moments are those where she forces herself further than before - White Trailer is still the best Trailer, and leaving Schnee Manor is the best moments of the maligned Vol 4 and 5 - so seeing a character moment like that, but in a different form, is really really cool.

And its spurred on by Ruby herself. That's important to a White Rose diehard like me.

On Ruby's side, i enjoyed the opening flashback. Really enjoyed that. A lot of people complained on the subreddit over the previous months about how Ruby "Just kept shooting things instead of using her scythe" and, yeah, the Scythe is cool n all, but she is also a Sniper. Her actually using the Sniper function of Crescent Rose is refreshing.

Blake's presence in the flashback is also interesting. Shes still an unknown factor in this timeline and every bit of information intrigues me more and more. She was present and clearly extremely friendly in team RuBY well after graduation. So what changed? What went wrong?

That flashback also ends on an excellent contrast between Ruby being happy with her speed and then her failing to find joy in what little speed she had. You clearly aimed to do that, and i think you executed that brilliantly.

Ruby and Weiss sharing a bonding moment over Ruby's gun collection was an important moment for them, and in character for Ruby. She was established as a weapon nut in Volume 1 and then... never really came back to that point afterwards. I do wonder just how many of those Chekov guns end up getting fired, though. You mentioned the one Machine Gun in your A/N, but a lot of time was spent detailing each of the others.

Im sure she has Crescent Rose somewhere. I am practically vibrating over the thoughts of potential scenes. Myrtenaster is still hanging about. Rose is still around somewhere. Im sure one day the girls will show each other their weapons - broken or useless as they are. A Hunters weapon is described as part of them, after all.

Im so looking forward to new chapters of this - both of the new version and the further chapters. Ive enjoyed this fic for a very long time - since before the name change, and "Wounded Reaper" became "Destiny." Im hoping to continue seeing this story in my update feed for some time to come.

...That is, if FFnet ever fixes their email system. Ive not gotten alert for the longest time, whether its for a story update or a PM. I checked my PMs a couple days ago and had 12 whole messages. :/

Thanks for writing this. I enjoyed reading it. I hope to see more, soon.

Good to see you again. Yeah. Canon pulled a few surprises on us in the last couple of volumes. That said, I'm still very interested in this story regardless of relevancy to canon. See you next chapter.

Damn, now I'm all emotional. This is seriously well done! The two scenes you mention having in your head for years, Ruby showing her collection (and the talk after) and Weiss at the range (and her realizations before and after it,) were *beautifully* done.

But I'll back up. The flashback is a great look at the sort of thing that has shaped Ruby. You give us her conflicted thoughts, and almost her rationalizations about the situation, and let us see how Beacon has shaped her here. She sees the evil, but she still doesn't like having to kill them. It's why I don't find it especially out-of-character; it's strange for them to be killing, yes, but she's still Ruby—albeit a hardened and somewhat more world-weary version. I also have a sneaking suspicion about the identity of that bandit clan...

My favorite part is at the end when she uses her Semblance. It's such a sharp contrast, both with the next scene and with her use in the obstacle course. She *loved* her Semblance, but now it causes her pain to even *think* about. It helps show that profound sense of loss she has about no longer being able to be a Huntress, which ties in beautifully when she's talking to Weiss.

I love how much Ruby enjoys talking about her guns, but I adore how much Weiss enjoys Ruby's enthusiasm even more, and Weiss opening up a little because of it is great. But her talk with Weiss shines above. Ruby's past, feeling helpless as a kid but discovering how to overcome, then feeling that same weakness again and realizing she can overcome again, that it's never too late... It's wonderful characterization, an excellent message, and also emotional and heart-wrenching; I'm rereading as I write this and choking up about it again. It's also precisely what Weiss needs to hear, to relight her fire. I think Ruby maybe suspected that when she said it, too, and definitely after the range. It's a superb bit of writing.

Then, Weiss is compelled to go teach herself to use Rosebud; she acts as if in a trance, almost, not even sure what she's doing, not feeling the cold outside because she's overwhelmed with the cold *inside* her (which she contrasts coming back into the house, after her fire's rekindled; I love that analogy, by the way.) Her emotion just around when she first fires the gun is great, the anger at herself and her father before giving way to a bit of catharsis. Ruby teaching Weiss is also great; she's calm, considerate, supportive, and understanding, even as Weiss balks. It looks like Ruby knows exactly what Weiss needs from this, and is determined to help her, to encourage her.

And all this while Weiss' walls slowly fall, despite how much she's been trying to keep them intact. It's one of the things I love about White Rose, one of the reasons I like it so much in the first place, but it's particularly... satisfying in this story because of how cold Weiss was at the start, and because of how much we see Weiss struggling with it, trying to resist being too familiar (like how Ruby notes that Weiss won't ever show herself in more casual clothes; I didn't note the relevance that Weiss is in her nightgown at the end until my second read,) but also actively trying harder to be less cold at the same time, trying not to be too curt and cut off conversations. By the end, Weiss has realized that she likes having Ruby around, that she actually wants Ruby to be her friend. Ruby has rekindled the fire in Weiss' soul, both through the comforting warmth of friendship and the fiery passion of taking her destiny into her own hands. It's truly beautiful.

Heh. I was trying NOT to make this review take up a full page. Oops. Well, it's a twenty-thousand-word chapter; I've got a lot to love. Really, excellent job.
Zoro50 chapter 15 . 2/13
Fan-freaking-tastic! So excited to see that their is another chapter to this story. I can't say that there was a scene in this chapter that I didn't enjoy. The flashback was really interesting and a great look into that slight strangeness you mentioned in Author's Note. How weird to think about how Ruby and company would handle killing humans.

Weiss learning to shoot was also pretty cool, though that has not been my experience with pistols, I agree with Ruby that shooting thousands of rounds will definitely clue you in all the myriad of things that you need to do to hit a target besides look down the sites, breathing, knowing the kick, etc. Also the intimacy described there was really well done. Not overly sweet and fluffy like a WAFF fic but somehow also real.

My favorite though was the revelation Ruby imparted to Weiss. Holy moley was I drawn in to what was happening there. Its something we have been looking forward to since this story started. The beginning of the reveal of what took out Team RuBY. I figured that was where Ruby's strength was going to come from, but looking at how that story could impact Weiss was great. The emotions displayed there were really authentic. It's something we all go through I think. Struggling to find our value in the world and protect ourselves. Really well done!

Keep up the great work! Can't wait to read what comes next! Where is this flame burning in Weiss going to go?

Shadow15951 chapter 6 . 2/12
This is for Chapter 13 (#15 on the site) but I wanted to borrow this and put this here because this site doesn't let you review a chapter twice

So, I saw this notification in my box, and it took a second to remember what story this was, but then I couldn't help a big smile when I recognized it, and saw the word count, figuring it was a nice big proper update and not bad news. I had to jump straight down to the a/n to just double check (and skimmed over anything that looked spoilery for the chapter) because I was so happy to see this continue.

I think the idea to rewrite the story while leaving this one as-is and continuing from there is a good one. It'll let you improve what you want to and also make sure that people won't just miss out if they've only got the one story followed—which... actually just made me realize that I didn't have you author-followed and that I missed something new from you. Anyway, probably just include a little reminder at the start of Chapter 14 for this version when it does come out, and it should make perfect sense for what's going on.

I went back to reread the last chapter to get a refresher on what's going on before delving into 13, but I'm just going to go back and reread it all and remember it properly because I've read so many things in the mean time. Plus, hey, it'll let me see the contrast with the rewrite better. That's why I wanted to put this here, so I could leave my thoughts on chapter 13 properly (and not make this a full-page-long review.) Now I'm off to read!
GearTech chapter 15 . 2/12
well that chapter was absolutely amazing! I love your writing style and how much detail you put into everything. I will definitely be reading your remake of this story. Keep up the amazing work!
0neWhoWanders chapter 14 . 11/2/2019
This story so far is brilliant. I love Ruby and the mystery of her past. I love Weiss and how she struggles between being passionate and dispassionate. Herder was great too and since I know nothing about mass effect, the character name or any references don't cloud my judgement to the actual story.

I hope to see this story spring up in my feed again in the future, but until then, know that I amm waiting patiently, for however long you need
iamking chapter 14 . 9/10/2019
