Honestly you could probably make this have two timelines. One story following the Canon and the other as an original- OR, you could also fuse the two. Write the Canon while coming up with what happens between each episode. I could totally see what you wrote as an in between behind the scenes. That may be your best option and be less stressful hopefully than having to choose one or doing two separate things. Two butterflies with one stone, ya know? Either way, I'm excited to see what you come up with!

I'd definitely want something different from canon; I want to see Steven confront the Gems about these issues, and you're a good enough writer that it will be executed meaningfully

Well I hope you continue this. There are dark thoughts troubling everyone's mind as showed in Mindful Education and I find it to be rather interesting how you would start off an original story. I always find it better to separate from the main story line when writing something. Sticking to the same thing can be rather dull at times when you're writing. Thanks for the amazing read.
