If that's blah, not sure what you'd call fireworks...very enjoyable! Lots of drama, evidently solid backstory, continuing very readable, and I will look forward to future installments.

Abe Sapien seemed to be on ready ground for falling in love at his first sight of newly arrived Amber, and then happened to overhear that she had a history and close familiarity with Prof. Broom; unavoidable, due to Amber hollering out her disillusionment in Broom and more, the instant she'd set eyes on him. Emotionally repelled, Abe didn't hang around long enough to hear further, that Broom had enough belief in her as his intended successor to Tom Manning, or anything of Broom and Amber's exchanges concerning her terrifying upbringing among her supernaturally powerful aunts. Amber's own powers are likewise known only to Broom at this time. So it turns out that Amber vows to take steps to comport herself to suit her new position as Director of the BPRD. Hellboy hasn't endeared himself to her at first meeting, and Abe has turned chilly. You well explain her history, its long term effects and thought processes which can turn Amber into a literal whirlwind when provoked. Will look forward to see how Amber settles into her one-of-a-kind situation - caught between the all too human FBI, and the agents of the compromised BPRD.

Who is the woman in Broom's sepia photo? As for Abe's selected books - I've read 'Jane Eyre' 15 times, read not much of 'The Scarlet Letter' and have seen only the film of 'A Clockwork Orange'. What's the secret?

The BPRD 'special talent' agents should ideally have a Director who actually sees the value of who they are. Though 'movie' Manning seemed to be temperamentally unfit, with not much sign of the natural 'cop' instincts such a leader needs, he looked in over his head, but meant well in a job he didn't enjoy or appear to want. So - I'll have to wait to see under what circumstances Manning had to be arrested. The offences alleged are heavies. Penal Code or FBI Internal? I feel kind of sorry for him!
