This is a very interesting idea you have here. Personally, I would like to think that there's life beyond death as well since the idea of absolute nothingness seems awful and boring. This is actually inspiring. I think I will write something about the characters being reunited after death as well as their victims. Oh, that'd be quite dramatic! This is a good piece you wrote.

I thought this was beautifully written, I love the concept of it, and I just very much enjoyed reading this. Thank you for writing it. You managed to make the ending lovely, in its own way.

Despite your admonition, I've never read the original. As such, it makes it difficult, nearly impossible, to follow the characters and who did what to whom-so I won't comment on those parts.
I will say that it reads well and is well written. The characters are made interesting and human.
I do think "...causing a noise like whispered secrets..." is a great line, though I would have said "sound". "Noise" is more negative.
The only thing that really bothered me is the long list of disclaimers, warnings, and apologies that preface the story. I suppose some small group insists on this sort thing, but I think it gives away too much.
