Re Snape's mild character change - this seems totally in keeping with someone that has never had a pet/familiar before and the monumental change that animal can bring to a lonely (whether they wish to admit they are lonely or not) persons life! I believe the bird is Harry - I continue to read to see if my deductive skills and reasoning are correct!

Dealing with Harry's adjustment to his new circumstances was necessary and you did it well. It would have been jarring (and unbelievable) if he was suddenly 100% competent in things he never had a chance to study after being found.

Suspicion confirmed! Dumbledore doesn't have a legal leg to stand on if he tries to interfere.

Somebody had to stand up to Dumbledore. Since they've had years to think about Harry in his absence and know exactly what his life was like with the Dursleys, Snape had to speak up. He's always looked out for the students even if he isn't good at being nurturing as well as protective.

I imagine Dumbledore wants to keep the Dursleys as as potential home for the missing Harry, or maybe as a home of record if he gets it through his head that that isn't a suitable place, wards or no wards.
Erebus is having a good effect on Snape by encouraging him to think and examine his own actions. When Neville Longbottom comes to Hogwarts, he'll find a very different classroom environment, I suspect. Will Harry be there, I wonder?

I think I know the connection between Harry and Snape's familiar and I want to see how this plays out.

In the first chapter, I thought, "Harry Potter's been experimenting with animagery," and was a little disappointed since that seems fairly common as an idea. The writing was good so I kept going and with the second chapter it seems I'm wrong since Charlie Weasley was out of school by the time Harry went. Also, the familiar likes Severus Snape. Harry wouldn't have taken a shine to him so easily. Now I guess I have to read on if I want more information.
Next chapter it is!
