So, here is the thing. Stefan should die at Elena's hands. He raped her, more than once and didn't actually really regret it at all, let alone repent for it. Her forgiving it is literally the worst thing she could do. And I really don't see why he shouldn't be killed brutally, he is the Ripper of Monterrey, remember? He has mass-murdered children on Christmas. He deserves no compassion even without the rapes.
Damon doesn't deserve Elena after today. He played right into Stefan's hands and gave him exactly what he wanted, an ensured weapon to sabotage his relationship. As soon as he accused Damon of his pride being more important than Elena's safety, Stefan won. He knows exactly how to manipulate Damon. What they did wasn't simply wrong but immensely dangerous. Katherine was physically harming Elena and physical trauma is easy to recover from. What happened tonight was very much liable to cause a permanent psychological break-down in her, they literally pushed her to the brink of mental break-down. In trying to ensure her physical safety they risked destroying her mind. How could Damon, who is not just smart but ruthlessly pragmatic miss that. A straight up way of trapping Katherine would be to almost kill Stefan. She would have come for him. Of course Stefan wouldn't care about destroying Elena since we have repeatedly seen in Canon that he doesn't care about her well-being unless he is the one she is sleeping with. The last thing he did on the show was sell her to Cade to make himself feel better. So it's not unexpected from him but really, Damon should have known better. I am extremely disappointed in him now and really Elena should just keep her distance from him for the time being.
I still think she should have gone after Stefan with a stake the first time he raped her and she has been entirely too soft on him but there is still time to rectify that. Whether or not anything else happens Elena should kill Stefan without mercy by the time the story ends.
