Well, that was...deep for lack of a better word. I...kinda am speechless right now but I still wanted to say that I appreciate the fact that, well, Shinichi decided to help Ran let go of the dream. She clearly didn't want to. I wonder how it'll turn out canon-wise...
I guess their romantic feelings fading, if they ever were there to begin with, is a very possible outcome. Sometimes, I wonder what exactly are their feelings for one another even if they clearly care deeply about one another. I wish the BO would be put behind bars to see how it will turn out between those two. Too many questions and not enough answers lol.

(too lazy to login but you can pm me if you want) Solid writing; I liked how you really took time to think about what dreams mean, and why Shinichi and Ran cling to each other. I just kind of dislike Eisuke personally, that's all (GAH) so when you mentioned him and Ran together I was just kind of like...really? RanxEisuke again? (It's what happens in every KaiShin fic LOLS) The only other thing I felt was that I wished Shinichi had given some thought to actually telling Ran the truth, instead of perpetrating another web of lies. I mean, I get the whole canon "she'll-be-in-danger" thing, but honestly I think if we all think about it it just seems more of a plot device than anything else (the BO would probably just kill her anyway). It just seems unnecessarily cruel to make her think he's actually dying, and I don't know if Ran would give up on him that easily even if he's faraway-like, she might want some last meeting with him, and if the FBI or whatever tries to interfere, I feel like she'd only fight harder. I do, however, appreciate that Shinichi knows what he's doing by telling Ran to move on isn't selfless...but I don't understand why Shinichi thinks he hasn't liked Ran romantically when he's had so many fantasies LOL (but again this is fanfiction so w/e anything can be spun).

I can't believe that no one thought of having Shinichi go this route before, even in the saddest OR happiest of resolution-fics. There's nothing wrong with telling Ran the partial truth - just leave all the stuff about criminal syndicates out of it.

Anyways, this was extraordinarily well-written and a decent heartbreaker. Even if I barely remember who the hell Eisuke is.

It works very well as a one-shot, but it also leaves me wanting to know more. For example; how does everyone else react to Shinichi's "revelation"? How does /Heiji/ react? Does he find out via Kazuha and freak out or does Shinichi call/text him the truth?

AUGH! So many questions-but I know that they'll most likely go unanswered.

Maybe a one-shot sequel for people's reactions to the "news"?

I'm so glad that you posted this. I recently read Ichthyophobia's story "Ten Points", and it left me feeling really horrible about how Shinichi treats Ran. This both gives a believable reason for Shinichi to treat Ran the way he does in canon and brings the relationship to probably the best conclusion the two could get. It also gives Ran more agency in that she was choosing to cling to the dream instead of just being a unwitting victim. Once again, thanks for posting this!

I was having such a happy morning ... Actually slept for a full 8 hours last night ... and was relaxing in bed with fresh squeezed orange juice and came across the email notification of a new story.

And then I read and got sadder and sadder as I went along.
It was a great story, don't get me wrong I just shoulda paid more attention to the blurb before actually reading it right away.
