Shark chapter 2 . 9/11/2016
-x-

It was snowing.

The snow was black. In the distant horizon, smoke rose to the sky like an errant god emerging from the depths. Iwagakure and its lava-spewing Yoton users, destroying the anchors that held the barrier in place. Alongside them were the grey and faded blue clad soldiers of Kiri, dismantling the whirlpools by freezing them into great chunks spiralled ice. The ninja of water country were children of the sea as much as the Uzumaki were; they knew how to bend the waters to their whims in their own ways.

Uzushiogakure would fall.

It was a truth Mako had known as a babe first seeing the outside world. He'd seen the white sand and palm trees and coral reefs, the ocean stretching as far as the eye could see. He'd seen a thousand gulls in the red-painted sunset sky, when Uzumaki Kazuki had carried him in his arms and held him the first and the last time.

Uzushiogakure.

And now, it would all burn.

"Mako?"

Clothes. A tent, a sleeping bag. Firewood. A few months worth of dried plums and non perishables. A small boat. Thousands of ryo and crates worth of weaponry, accumulated over time. All sealed into his skin, into the intricate ink that decorated his body and was hidden by the clothes on his back.

The only other thing of note he had on him was the metal band on his forehead.

"Mako what are you doing? Come on, we have to join the fourth platoon!"

He glanced at them, eyes as cold as they'd always been. A brief light of sadness flickered in them as he saw Asada's confused face, Tatsu's impatient one, and Matsutaka-sensei's trusting smile...

And then, he became ice once more. He was cold, colder than the northern winds even though his blood pumped through his ears.

"I won't be coming."

"Come on Mako, you scared?" Tatsu taunted, trying to put on a false facade of braveness all could see through. And for the first time since he opened his eyes covered in his mothers blood, Uzumaki Mako admitted the truth.

"Yes. I am," he smiled bitterly. The forehead protector hit the sand. "Goodbye."

It took a split second for Matsutaka-sensei to catch on and he burst into motion, lunging to catch him- but the student had long surpassed the master. With but a thought Mako flickered away into the sealine, his sensei's outstretched fingers curling around the last wisps of an afterimage.

He wasn't the strongest fighter. The strokes of his brushes were intricate, but they were not the finest. He wasn't the master of ninjutsu; he wasn't a talented weaver of genjutsu, nor a perfectionist of taijitsu. But there was one thing he was the best at; he'd always been the best at.

Running. Running like a coward.

Uzumaki Mako was born with his legs kicking.

Uzumaki Mako was the fastest ninja in Uzushio.

Droplets of sprayed up saltwater stung his skin as they whipped fast. He headed towards the kekkai, cracks already spreading through the barrier. It was colder here; the bone-seeping chill of the Yƫki clan making itself known.

Not a moment too soon. The barrier shattered apart.

Evaporating shards of chakra clung to his skin before disappearing- but Mako didn't stop. His coils burned as he stretched them to the limit; initiating water walking and shunshin in alternating bursts.

He blew straight through the Iwa and Kiri blockade, and did not look back. A brief flicker of crimson, and then he was gone, too fast to stop or even notice. He didn't stop till he was a few hundred miles away into the sea, only then bringing out a boat to rest in, still having to manipulate water to make sure it didn't sink in the tumultous waves.

Behind him, the sky burned.

I look forward to more :)
Unknown Variable chapter 2 . 8/14/2016
Sorry, but ATYPICAL means NOT TYPICAL, OUT OF THE ORDINARY, etc. so if you wanted to say Matsuoka was a NORMAL Uzumaki, you should've said "he had [all that stuff], like A TYPICAL Uzumaki". And Mako should've said he couldn't get invested IN his team, not "he couldn't get invested with them". Also you forgot to put the 'ing' after "He's only bad at remember names".

LMAO at Mako's team being a cliche, ahahahaha sucks for you, bro. OF COURSE YOU'RE SASUKE, OR PROBABLY ITACHI WITHOUT THE MASS-MURDER. Also he is VERY isolated LOL. No one sees this as a problem? XDD It would be HILARIOUS and IRONIC if he went missing-nin after Uzushio falls. BUT IT'S AWESOME NOW THAT MAKO'S TEAM SEEMS TO BE DRAWING CLOSER TO EACH OTHER. AND LOL AT MAKO REVEALING HIS PAST WITH KUSHINA AND HIDDEN TALENTS! :D

AUGH THAT ENDING MAKOOOOOOOOOO! IT'S GONNA HURT WORSE WHEN THEY ALL DIE AND YOU REALIZE YOU NEVER MADE THE TIME TO HANG OUT WITH THEM OR KNOW THEM AT ALL! AT LEAST IF YOU HANG OUT WITH THEM YOU ONLY HAVE THE REGRETS OF NOT BEING ABLE TO SAVE THEM INSTEAD OF THAT /AND/ THE REGRETS OF NOT APPRECIATING THEM WHILE THEY WERE ALIVE!
Unknown Variable chapter 1 . 8/14/2016
Okay this has been bothering me, so: STAID and STAYED are two different words, that mean two different things. STAID is an adjective meaning dull, upright, and boring. STAYED is a verb that is the past tense of STAY, meaning to linger. PLEASE stop confusing them.

But otherwise, this story is great, and I love the OC being Kushina's older bro instead of part of the Rookie Nine, like how most SI!OC fics are.
de junco chapter 2 . 8/2/2016
Huh. I really like where you're taking this. The fear of caring for people who not only are part of a fictional series, but are members of a doomed village... Mako, you're being a dick, but I can understand why. It's interesting how your SI OC really is adamant about not caring for people, though it's clear that he's failing.

The thing with Kushina is also interesting, that he doesn't consider her to be his sister. Is that because he wants to avoid being close to her, because he still feels like she's fictional, or because he harbors resentment towards her for being the clan heir?

I also like how you're taking a jab at the "top two students with the bottom student" team formation, and how it really is a shit idea in any village. Putting two overachievers in with someone whose skills are far behind ill inevitably cause resentment at lost opportunity to further skills as well as jealousy and anger at the perceived arrogance and self-conceit of the more skilled teammates.

It's kind of sad, because I usually look forward to stories that really take things in an unorthodox way (i.e. flat out refusing to bond with others), and KEEP it in that direction without giving in too soon, but... like, seeing Mako's team genuinely want to bond with him, and his excuses and rejection of their outstretched hands is surprisingly depressing. Like, I want him to remain stubborn and self-isolating (mostly because it's interesting, and I like slightly morally ambiguous or grey characters), but it actually hurts a bit to see him being very consciously callous towards his team when they do make efforts to connect, despite their differences and problems.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this continues, thanks for posting!
