Beautiful, terribly vivid, wonderfully heart-wrenching, and sweeter than stevia. Actually, I highly suggest that you rename the characters and have it published as an original story (either leaving the detective element or trading it for something else).

Heart-wrenching. To lose Hortense... the emotions were well-written. It was a cruel ending, though I suspected it from the first mention of the fever.
