S1ink3r chapter 1 . 12/28/2019 When will this fix be readable again? This Is a really interesting concept! |
Shad0ish chapter 1 . 2/18/2017 Ahh. Wow. Poor Zuko. Summery almost put me off honestly but I love the look of the story so far. |
Guest chapter 1 . 2/17/2017 Interesting turn of events. |
Guest chapter 1 . 2/14/2017 Interesting idea and start. However, I don't think you should have Azula out right join up with the Gaang. I think maybe following cannon a bit. Zuko's scar, his banishment, but maybe since Azula wasn't around, he was different too and joined them at the South Pole. Then maybe they meet up with Azula in Kyoshi, where Ursa took her instead, where she could learn to be a respectable warrior, without the use of fire as she was taught it was a bad thing. |
curious viewer chapter 5 . 12/30/2015 This chapter does show some interesting filler in how the dynamics in the Royal family were, and how the relationship between Zuko and Ozai is different than in the original. However, to keep this story real I would recommend tagging this chapter as christmas special or something, because it really wouldn't make sense for the avatar world to have christmas, unless it was some other celebration with the same thoughts of family behind it, like spirit feast or something. Also, snow in the fire nation makes even less sense. It is an island nation with a tropical climate, snow would be practically impossible. But ignoring these two complaints, the chapter does provide family bonding times, so just changing the title to christmas special, or omake would fix it. For your previous chapter, in my opinion it works well, although I would recommend being carefull in talking about the structure of the school and especially what it's made of. Bathroom stalls and sinks, closets with door knobs which can be melted, these all bring up the image of a normal high school, while this is a completely different society which would be much more likely to have completely wooden structures with the sliding door as you mentioned. I guess my overall recommendation would be: Remember that you're writing in a fictional world based on Asian cultures but with heavy spiritual influences, which takes place during a time when basic structures are the norm and societal values are very different than from what we're used to or find acceptable. Steel-making on an industrial level is still a recent development, and only in fire nation territory is it present, where the focus is on military development. I apologize if it seems condescending or something, but that is the only real weakness I could spot in your writing, it seems too modern for the world where it takes place. |
Ghostassasssin chapter 5 . 12/26/2015 Nice chapter with zuko telling story of his Christmas as a child. But I can't help but wonder if zuko is going to be a storyteller later on in the story |
Hyrulean-Hero chapter 4 . 12/19/2015 I find your lack of updates disturbing. |
curious viewer chapter 3 . 12/10/2015 Although I can't spot any real grammar mistakes or the like in this chapter, on thing which does stick out to me is the lack of enviromental description. Is it perhaps an idea for you to mention the surroundings in which a scene is taking place, especially if it's the first time that you mention it this chapter? For example, the location of Azula and Ursa can be read as being their house, because it is mentioned that they are standing near their house, in a backyard with an apple tree and that there is an academy nearby. Ursa mentions that she has learned of it recently, letting us presume that they just moved there, but if she want Azula to go there regularly, does that mean they intend to stay in this new house for longer or not? If you would take the time to describe the backyard in which they are, and perhaps the house itself we could have a better picture of what is happening. Is it cluttered, clean, posh, poor or middle class? We don't know, but those details could tell us a lot about how Ursa and Azula are spending their lives, especially their financial situation. And in the first scene where Ursa is thinking about Zuko, if the surroundings were briefly mentioned we could get an idea of whether they are travelling or staying somewhere. It could really help the story along, by showing us instead of telling us. Zuko is obviously in the palace and we can deduce that he is in a training area. But is it a courtyard? Is it an arena? We don't know so we are forced to fill in the blanks, but a brief description of what the area looks like could really help. Even something small, as for example Zuko blasting his opponent of his feet and mentioning that he was thrown across the expanse of the training room or something. Things like this really help fill in the blanks. The southern pole could be shortly described as great empty snowlands where two water tribe members are the only things in sight, standing next to a great Ice ball. It takes time and practice to get descriptions like this right, but they are incredibly important in communicating your story to us. Now, as you seem to be making this a full story (which makes me really happy!) it would be prudent to think of how you will translate events in the show to the story. You are writing fanfiction, so there's nothing wrong with using the story events as framework, although you should always consider how what you've changed changes these events. Most ATLA stories which I've read tend to take a good look at the episodes, and skip filler episodes, mentioning them in passing, while having episodes which affect the characters being written in detail. I would recommend this method, because it reads very well, and allows for a lot of personal freedom in how you're treating the story. Now, I guess i'll start my ramble on characters, because that really is what drew me to this story: Azula and Zuko in this chapter do seem changed just enough by the parent with whom they've stayed. Azula still has that critical tone in her voice, but she seems way more open emotionally with naturally interacting with her mother. Honestly, she seems far more like a normal 14 year old girl than she was in the show. Zuko on the other hand gives me the feeling that there's something wrong with how he perceives his father. He is absolutely loyal to him, and yet he becomes furious when someone questions their bond, like how Mai did. I do think that we need to see him in action some more to allow his changed nature to show better. Perhaps over the years he developed a cruel streak, because that is what his father approves of? I would also guess that this Zuko would not have any problems with commanding respect from his subordinates as he had in the original show, because I would guess that he received officer training while staying in the royal palace. Royals tend to get that. Additionally, you mention in the summary that Azula could be the one to meet up with Team Avatar but Azula is still staying in the fire nation and is even going to go to school there. I wonder how you're going to have them meet and have Azula join with them. Because of what she said I don't doubt that she would want to hasten the defeat of the fire nation, but I guess that this Azula would really hesitate about leaving her mother behind. Or she could just pull a teenager and join Aang for the heck of it, either way is believable. But back to what I was trying to say, I wonder how you're going to get Aang and the rest somewhere they could meet with Azula. Possible route passing through whatever backwater town Azula lives in because they don't have a certain angry prince chasing them? Or maybe Azula getting into trouble which leaves her out of the fire nation and able to be picked up? Can't wait to see former royal turned to middle-class civilian Azula deal with camping out and living on the move. I do hope actually, that we can see that the change in education Zuko had is having a real effect on his moral compass. Please don't hesitate in making Zuko a villain. Without crazy Azula, having Zuko as the fire nation prince really needs to be a threat because otherwise you run the risk of having the story feel too relaxed. If Zuko gives of the impression of simply wanting to capture the avatar, or of being reasonable all the time then it really would greatly reduce the tension of him attacking team Avatar. Have you given any thought of perhaps having Zuko deal with the madness Azula had in the end of the series? After all, he spent years in the close presence of his father, and as you can see with his whole sickness episode in Ba Sing Se, he really isn't that stable mentally. It would really impress upon the reader the fact that Zuko and Azula have effectively changed places and the effect that it has upon them personally. Now I also can't help but think about Zuko and Azula eventually meeting and how they would react to each other. Zuko seems to have shut them out of his thoughts, maybe because he really did feel betrayed by their departure. What could be an interesting dynamic would be if Azula remembered him as her big brother who she actually cared for, because in this story she wouldn't resent him for having their mother's love. Additionally, in this story she would be the weak one of the two which could be shown with her witnessing Zuko's firebending and being afraid or in awe or something. Just a scene which doesn't need to be a confrontation, but Azula (and us) realizing how much of a gap has developed due to her brother being taught by their father himself. This is al just speculation, but would put an interesting twist to the usual sibling dynamic which tends to exist between the two, like I said before, showing how they have in effect switched places. Again, I apologize if my rambling annoys you, but this story has a massive amount of potential, and seems really unique in how you've changed the Zuko-Azula relationship. I wish you all the best in writing this story further! |
Sunnyside51 chapter 3 . 12/8/2015 Will you have canon pairings or will Azula have a chance with someone else? |
Guest chapter 1 . 12/6/2015 I love this story |
MSG1000 chapter 2 . 12/6/2015 Nice to see an update! I get why Ursa couldn't take Zuko also but... he's still so totally, royally screwed. Can't wait to see how that plays out! |
Asteroth1 chapter 2 . 12/6/2015 I really love the concept of this story. My only fear is that this will be destroyed by future yuri pairing which plaque Azula character... I'm gonna watch this story with interest as I'm curious where will it take us :) |
curious viewer chapter 2 . 12/6/2015 Alright, this really sounds like an interesting set-up for a story. Especially because of the dynamics which can exist between Azula and Zuko and possibly Ursa and Ozai. So now Zuko is going to spend years and years under his father who will now most likely completely focus on making Zuko a true heir. And on the other side you have Azula who, instead of being very close to Ozai is apparently very close to Ursa, something which basically has the potential to completely flip her character around. Something which popped up when thinking about this was how their power levels are going to change now. Azula pushed herself immensely from a young age and received most likely the best training from Ozai, being the prodigy that she was. Now if Azula and Ursa are on the run then that means that they won't be able to easily find great firebending teachers and that Azula won't have that intense pressure to improve and succeed, that 'killer instinct', which she had in the show. But still, she's a prodigy, and perhaps Ursa has tricks to teach her? I really hope that you give her abilities a lot of thought. Now, on the other side, Zuko in the show has been put under negative pressure since he was small, and has consistently been behind in training in the show. You could see this in the show, because even though he was older than Azula by two years he consistenly underperformed compared to her, and was only able to fight on the same level with her after he got training from dragons, and while she was unstable due to her insanity. But in this story Zuko is the only heir Ozai has and he is probably going to receive all the attention given to Azula in the real story, meaning his power levels are bound to rise. Along with that I really think his mentality is bound to change immensely. From being angry and in denial because of what happened at the agni-kai, plus being obsessed with the avatar, to an insane amount of loyalty directed at his father. I wonder what you will do with Iroh though? In the original story it would be easier for him to play a direct role in Zuko's life because his own father wasn't there to consistently play a role, but now I would find it hard to believe that Ozai would allow his brother who he himself dislikes to have any sort of influence on his heir apparent. In short, I would guess that Zuko becomes a lot more militarily capable because Ozai would teach him directly now. Added to that, I imagine his bending and fighting would be a lot better and more brutal. I'd guess that Ozai would teach his son killing a lot earlier now, and because Zuko would be older than Azula was during the time that Aang awakes, it seems quite possible to me that he would advance further in his studies, although his bending could be less diverse. Azula on the other hand would be a lot less vicious than shown in the show. Still somewhat arrogant and conniving? Yeah sure. But this Azula would spend 7 years before Aang being held lovingly close by her mother. Added to that the fact that she would be less capable in fighting, and you can have a complete reversal in roles during the chase for the avatar. Zuko being the grim, evil prince and Azula being the rebel former princess, who strives to be different from what she perceives the royal house to be. Alright, I guess you have noticed already, but I tend to ramble a lot when an idea speaks to my imagination. Please don't feel forced to follow any of my suggestions, but if you'd find the time, I'd love to hear you motivations behind what you're planning with your story, and with the characters! If you'd like to do that, PM me if you want, otherwise I'll just keep reading! I wish you success with writing this story and finding time and inspiration for it. |
WeylandCorp 4 chapter 2 . 12/5/2015 Yaaaaah! You finally updated! Your alive! I wonder how azula will turn out with her mother their. |
festiveruin chapter 2 . 12/5/2015 I really like this premise and so fat, the characters have been pretty accurate. Ozai feels a little off but not too much so. Your writing could use some polishing (I would suggest a beta for this), but otherwise it's good, and suits the story pretty well. My main issue is with the use of "God", because the closest thing the Avatar world has to a deity are spirits, hence the reason a lot of authors like to use that in place. "Avatar" as an exclamation kind of fits but sounds really, really awkward. If I were you, I would stick to one point of view and not switch around. It feels really clunky. Stick to one character's point of view, or go third person. That's all I have to say for this chapter. Can't wait to see what happens next! |
