Kind of reminds me of that Terry Pratchett book where Vimes went back in time and had to wrestle with his own inner beast... until he realized intellect would triumph over a beast any time because a beast just reacts. It can't change/ adapt without intellect to guide it.

yo! just finished catchung up on this one as well. i usually try to keep fanfics written by the same author for the same fandom separate, but i'll make an eception for you. that said, while i understand you focusing on the nobles and Rai, how about abit more attention on some of teh kids like Yuna or Ikhan. Also in the earlier chapter Regis mentioned that Seira had plans. since the nobes here apparantly have more social life then give us a bit more look into that once the arc with the M's and the T's are done

I really loved the initial confusion of everything - wait what are they doing? Oh they’re out getting takeout. OH they’re fighting while casually tossing the phone between them to make Muzaka get take out. (Woahh Franken calls Rai ‘Raizel’ in this, right, right. But woaah.) Oh I love the slow reveals of info - it’s no just any Union elder they’ve caught - it’s Crombel?! (There was a hint - he called Franken ‘F.’)

I do remember that in this verse the first thing a nice human friend offered Rai was an apple - and now Rai is out there making delicious bite sized apple desserts; coincidence? I think not. It’s also so very Rai to like desserts and memorise making his favs. I don’t even remember if the eight spoons of sugar in his tea is canon or just very good shared fandom headcanon but it is Good.

I don’t know why this hasn’t been explored more in fic but - the household goes off to get answers and give closure to the trio and M-24. M-21 and M-24 actually find some of the M-series names. Tao and Takeo finding out exactly what the heck had happened to them. Takeo finding out that he was an only child from the start. (Did Teira really exist at one point? If so, even more horrible what became of her thanks to Union.)

The part with Tao and Takeo talking was particularly heart stabby for me. I really liked this chat. Probably because in fandom Tao is always the light hearted comic relief who unerringly has a positive outlook on things. Which of course is nice and he’s absolutely that! The one who's sunny and make jokes! But when every fic shows only that side of him I think it glosses over some other important parts of Tao.

I think often about Tao going off to meet an internet stranger because ‘wow look they’re smart’ so he humoured himself for some Companionship. The Tao who never entertained with the idea that he could escape the Union, who walked towards Krans to get absorbed into nothing only moments after finding out he was experiment food - because that was what he was supposedly made for. There was no possible life for him outside of the Union. After finding out he was even more expendable than previously anticipated he accepts it immediately.

He consoles Ikhan about his own death before walking towards it. He calmly walks towards Krans. (Until Ikhan and co made him think ‘but what if?’ ‘what else is there to lose?’ ‘choose your own end - die getting consumed by Krans, by the Union, or go against everything for the opinion of a high school boy?' )

Him and Tao need more talk time but this was a very lovely (and…sad..) addition. I’m so shook and impressed at the amounts of contracts everybody has made - looks like it’s much more positive and normalised in this verse’s future. Tao wanting a contract for him (and Takeo) to not feel alone. Can modified humans make contracts with modified humans without noble involvement? If so, Tao should definitely make a contract with Takeo :) Thanks for the chapter, especially liked the ending with tao ~

I really do love reading this fic. It's so much more hopeful than canon (which is down right depressing with small shots of funny and/or touching lately) and even your other stories.
After a bunch of fics that have been down right downer, this was a great pick me up.

Honestly, I'm kinda surprised the Union bothers keeping track of their "recruits." I mean, logically, it would be good to have their medical records and family histories, but uuuuuh the Union is not so good at basic logic. Their research practices are insane enough that I find it easy to imagine them just not keeping track of that stuff.
