Slytherin is so maligned! It's clear JK Rowling is biased- all the main good guys are Gryffindor, all the main bad guys are Slytherin. The exceptions are Peter Pettigrew, Regulus Black, and Snape. Also Andromeda, although how many people catch that she's Slytherin because all the Blacks but Sirius are, I do not know. Seriously, Hermione should've been Ravenclaw. And why Crabbe and Goyle are in Slytherin when they don't seem to have one brain cell for cunning between the both of them, I do not know.
It is for these reasons I always enjoy a good NotEvilSlytherinHarry story.

(Personal rant: Why are snakes nearly always the "evil" animal? I know snakes. I like snakes! They are perfectly sweet creatures that, like most animals, won't hurt you unless you hurt them first. [With the possible exception of one or two species of venomous snakes.] Grrr...)

I like Dudley's introspectiveness here. His character arc makes sense, as does Harry's change. I LOVE the idea of Dudley being magical SO MUCH! This arc is canon, funnily enough; it's just 6 years earlier.
About kids talking like English majors...I wish I could help. My novel's MC is 15, and it really helps that she's a big reader and budding scientist. I don't have to limit my vocabulary, and not as much as you'd think when I'm writing childhood flashbacks.
