The Founders enchanted it to Sort the students after they (the Founders) died. How is Morgana susposed to be the Ambrose heiress if her current alias isn't an Ambrose? And according to Ms. Rowling's timeline, SS/PS takes place during the 1991-1992 school year, which means that Merlin's alias would only be three years old if he was born in 1988.
